The contrast of the suffering faces of our troops against those sunny smiles is almost (but not) an argument for the draft.

I wouldn't favor the draft. The poor people would be forced to join up, and the rich and elite would still find ways to avoid it, as they did in the 60's.

I couldn't disagree with this statement more. First, Drudge is an opportunist that has some radical beliefs (abortion abolition) but is willing to turn on anyone to make a name for himslf. He is not a "typical conservative".

Second, a "typical conservative" does indeed have shame, a moral compass and a stong concept of honesty. I know examples and they are appalled by Bush et al. The new style Neo-Conservative is a beast of utility. All things are expendable in the persuit of power and money. Typical, or real, Conservatives see this as an unsavory and disaterous view.

Careful with the braod brush. we don't need a Left Ann Coutier.

"An opportunist with radical beliefs." Delay, Gingrich, Henry Hyde, George Bush, Bob Barr ad infinitum. If "real" conservatives have moral compasses they have chosen not to follow them. It appears "real" conservatives want it both ways. They want the Drudges of the world to proliferate and further the push of the right wing (conservative) causes while sitting back and feigning piety. If "real" conservatives see this as unsavory then why haven't they taken action to clean their own house? Are "real" conservatives applying their standards of decency to their spokesman? No. Are "real" conservatives sharing their compasses with their spokesmen? No. The brush will get narrower when "real" conservatives act to narrow it.
