Anyone here seen "Memoirs of a Geisha"? |
|
What did you think? I saw it last night and it was much better than I thouhgt it would be. Not as good as the book, which was wonderful. But pretty good overall. Stunning camera work.

it was just OK. As you said, great visuals - but it just failed to capture the whole feeling of the book.

3. I thought it was decent |
|
Though, I still find it odd that they cast leading Chinese actresses in Japanese roles and that they all spoke English.
I'd rather have had it all in Japanese with subtitles.
And, why is Gong Li always angry in whatever part she plays, be it a Chinese movie or a US one? (we had watched "Curse of the Golden Flower" over the weekend, which also stars an angry Gong Li, and an angry Chow Yun Fat)

Aesthetically beautiful camera work.
Not the worst movie I've ever seen.

I read the book and loved it. I thought they did a good job on the movie.
My husband even liked the movie.

kinda agree. It was visually interesting enough for me to stay awake, but the book was so much more about the inner life of the characters, and that didn't translate well to film.

10. Good enough cinematography but not enough explosions or nudity |
|

;-)
The lack of lots of nudity was actually a bit surprising to me.
The happenings and character development were also not very memorable.

a total lack of exploding genitals. That was a downer.

12. Especially because it has to do with Japanese culture, a realm wherein... |
|
exploding genitals are not a rare occurrence, at least if the animation from Japan is to be trusted.

I sense that this is one of those movies you have to be "in the mood" for. I didn't see Schlinder's List for almost 2 years after it came out. Loved the movie, but definitely had to wait until I felt I was ready to see it.
