10. it's a reference to an excerpt from page 449 of the book "alcoholics anonymous" |
|
commonly referred to as the "big book."
the key to serenity, to wit:
"And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation -- some fact of my life -- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.
Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes."

12. aa is modeled on fundamentalist christian dogmatism |
|
in its strictest interpretation.
the purest doctrinal variation is the sect that claims the program is simply "the first 165 pages." any deviation from that formulaic understanding is indicative of questionable sobriety

i was ONE of those fundamentalist aa'ers at one time.
every person's experience is different, it doesn't make what you experience of understand any less true.
i'm doing better and must have sufficient distance though, i forgot it was the first 164, instead of 165. yay for me!

20. You are stating your opinion as fact. |
|
AA was begun by 2 christian men. Fact.
AA is modeled on Stictest Christian Dogma. Opinion.
that's enough, I'm not going here again. I'm done.

like i said, don't construe it as taking any meaning from an alternative understanding you might have. i'm not contextualizing this include you or your world.

13. Actually, It is not... |
|
It "was" on page 449, but not in the new 4th edition though.
and it is NOT from the original first 164 pages of the big book, which is what makes up "the program."
It is from one man's personal story, his opinion, based on his experience. It is NOT Dogma.
and I tend to agree with the sentiment.
That being said, whenever someone refers me to page 449, I want to punch them in the throat... :D

16. So... let's say a person annoys you in AA. |
|
And you turn to that person and politely ask them to pipe down.
That person would then say, "Page 449" as an answer?

19. let's say someone annoys you in aa |
|
and you act on it. the oldtimers will cause you to question almost every natural response you might have and look at your thinking as being a precursor to next drink. they'll say you're not working a good program, and the rest of the people will love bomb you at coffee.

You wanna bet it does.
But back home in the Addiction/Recovery forum, all is sweetness and light, because, well, none of that "arguing" stuff is allowed.
Unless you happen to be a 12-stepper who wants to ridicule anyone who isn't, and any opinion or belief s/he might happen to hold ...

eschew ALL identity politics!
i breezed through some of the posts there and the "rallying of the troops" post in reference to this thread.
but jesus fuck, i'm going to express my opinion.
i think people don't understand that you can discuss something and it isn't necessarily all about them.
it IS possible to discuss IDEAS.

30. I guess that's actually the basic problem |
|
it IS possible to discuss IDEAS.
AA pretty much outlaws that activity. THINKING is what gets you in trouble, doncha know?!?
i think people don't understand that you can discuss something and it isn't necessarily all about them.
So no wonder that's the reaction to somebody doing it ... banish that whole "ideas" thang from one's universe, and that's what somebody else discussing ideas might actually look like.
Once yer in that vortex, there's just no way out, it seems.

I much prefer this quote if I'm using Dr. Paul as a reference
If I focus on what's good today, I have a good day and when I focus on what's bad I have a bad day. If I focus on the problem, the problem increases; when I focus on the answer, the answer increases."
It's all in where I put my energy yanno??
as for your little sayings, I'd add:
Life's a bitch and then you die. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Things are tough all over. That and $1 will get you a cup of coffee.
