Have you ever had moonshine?
Being a Virginia militia man, I often have the opportunity to partake of this fine, fine elixer.

My first experience came last year while unwinding from a night standing vigil on the AZ border: an ice-cold mason jar of viscous white lighting was presented for me to take a long draught. Anticipating the burn, it went down suprisingly smooth, almost instantly turning my knees a litte wobbly. A cursory hand waving in front of my eyes confirmed that embalming fluids or methanol were nowhere to be found in this mountain-crisp drink.

1. Yes, in the mid 80s while attending SFA
in Nacogdoches, Texas, the guys living next to us in the dorm were good ole boys from the Piney East Woods of Texas. Really nice guys. They had moonshine. The stuff burns like hell. It was akin to Everclear I suppose.

2. Yes, I've had American, Greek and Brazilian moonshine...
I found all three of them to be a hellacious experience, though I will say I preferred the American.

28. I know raki from Turkey and ouzo from Greece
you need to eat tzaziki (or jejuk in Turkey) with the booze to help with the hangover.

32. If I remember correctly,
one of the provisions when Crete formally joined up with the Greek gov't was that they could continue to make local moonshine. In the area where I lived (near Iraklion) they referred to it as "raki". This may well have been a remnant of Turkish invasions, but I'm not sure.

I *love* tzatziki, and I've almost perfected my own recipe, though I find that even drained whole-milk yogurt pales in comparison to real Greek yogurt. Anyway, it's a nice compliment to my souvlaki, which I daresay rivals anything I've ever had on the island. Raki, on the other hand, I have no desire to make at home.

Corn squeezins are real popular in the Ozarks. It can be really good smooth stuff too - until it hits your stomach and explodes.

6. Yes, an Irish version called Poteen.
It's so strong you have to dilute it and make a toddy out of it.

8. I'm scared
We have some family who live out in the country in NC and at a reunion of my husband's family they gave us a jar of it, that we never opened, now it's been in the back of the fridge for years.
What you had sounds nice but I have a feeling we better not even open this now :scared:

14. Everclear is mass produced, legal moonshine
From what I've heard, REAL homemade moonshine has herbs preserved in it to kill the burn.

19. Oh yes.
We have a few branches of the family tree that still make regular trips into the woods/swamps to continue their own version of the Whiskey Rebellion.

I keep a mason jar of the stuff in my liquor cabinet for anyone that wants a taste too.

21. I've tried a sip or two of "moonshine" that was legal and sold at
liquor stores, but I've never tasted the homemade kind, although I understand that it is available in these parts if you know the right people.

23. We used to put a piece of charred wood in the jar
The charcoal was supposed to absorb some of the "badness" and leave clean smooth moonshine. I don't know if it worked, never did any "scientific" research on the subject. Or if I did, I don't remember.

27. yes long ago someone had soem from back east - I don't remember it too well
nor do I know if it was cane or corn. More recently and whenever I can get it - bacanora - a Sonora, Mexican version of homemade tequila - bootleg, made from agave, but not the blue tequila agave. THAT is what you should have been having down on the border! (makes you more intelligent - guaranteed! )

29. There are runs that taste like water
and all the others.

I grab the the water when I hear it's around. Usually a bad idea since liquor puts my face in mud puddles and briar patches. Well.. it's just tradition up here hehe.

:hangover:

No need to malt grain when you have sugar, pomace, and water.

31. We got in trouble as kids..
When we were camping our ball fell into the mud and we cleaned it off with what we thought was a jug of water. Turns out if was my uncle's White Lightening. I'd say the roof came off, but were outside. He was not pleased.

Personally, I've only had Everclear and this stuff called Diesel that was 190 proof and damned effective for this Southern girl.
