Speaking of Hot Dogs - what is, in your humble opinion, the best way to cook em?? |
|
Over an open fire, in a skillet with onions and celery seed, nuke em, pigs in a blanket, chopped up with beans, make em into corn dogs, with sauerkraut....
Some of the best I have made (Nathan's all beef) was in a skillet with a bit of water, onions, celery seed, and some hot sauce then simmered.
I have a whole pack left to cook, and am looking for ideas :)

1. Replace the water with beer ... |
|
... slow simmer until dogs are steamed through. Remove dogs from pan, turn up heat; throw some sauerkraut, onions, and red (or hot) peppers into pan once liquid is reduced, and 'stir fry' until liquid has been absorbed.
I like to throw in a sprinkle of caraway seeds as well, if you like 'em.
Damn - now I'm hungry!

3. Over a campfire ring in the high Sierra... |
|
next to a fast-flowing stream...and with a thin, freshly peeled willow branch shoved up their rear so they can be roasted over aforementioned fire...just remember to turn 'em regularly.
Along with the wieners: wrap some sweet Vadalia onions in foil and toss 'em into the coals until they start to caramelize. Do the same with some baking 'taters.
Next morning: chop up the left over wieners, onions, and potatoes, and scramble some eggs. Then, mix the whole thing together with some mild picante sauce, toss the mix into flour tortillas, and enjoy some most excellent breakfast burritos.
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

|
If I recall correctly there are 150 calories per dog but I don't know how much fat.

5. Don't want to rain on your campfire, but hot dogs are total garbage -- 50% fat. |

I've abandoned purchasing them and eating them. I told my husband that he can still have one whenever he goes to Costco, but I don't want to spend any money buying or any time preparing them.
The last batch tasted absolutely crappy, so this was an "easy do" for me.
However, I do miss the sauerkraut that went on top.

12. but only if you put Kapusta on it (recipe for sauerkraut lovers!) |
|
Kapusta...the BEST form of sauerkraut EVER!!!!
1 Onion chopped 2-3 slices bacon chopped 1-2 cloves garlic minced Fresh sauerkraut rinsed and drained kosher salt & ground pepper to taste caraway seeds (optional - I don't use them)
spray sauce pot lightly with cooking spray add chopped bacon till browned and rendered fat add onions and saute till tender, add minced garlic and saute another minute, add salt & ground pepper (add seeds if wanted) add sauerkraut and stirfry to "deglaze" the pot. add water to cover sauerkraut bring to boil, then reduce to simmer, partially covered for 45 minutes - an hour. I can eat Kapusta all by itself, but if you cook your hot dogs or Kielbassy in it, it not only makes them taste great, it adds more flavor to the Kapusta.
YUM!!!

6. The only way to cook veggie dogs is to steam them. |
|
Otherwise, they turn out very nasty and un-hot-dog-like.

8. Boil 'em first, but then... |
|
Put them in the buns, add chili and shredded colby/jack cheese, and place on a cookie sheet.
Stick the whole batch into a 400 degree oven for about 5 minutes, so the buns get toasty, and the cheese melts!
Yum!

13. on a stick, over a wood fire on a cold Halloween night |
|
after trick or treating. With a little char on the outside
My church used to have a hot dog party after our Trick or Treat for Unicef night out.
Now if you can't get them that way, you need either an air show or athletic event in front of you to make them really good.

20. Broiled or on the grill. |
|
I like mine kind of burnt too so they are a little crispy outside.
And I only use kosher hot dogs - I find they just taste better
