Poll question: Where do you keep the thermostat in the summer. |
|
At our house, it's a constant battle between my wife and me: she likes it at a balmy 79 degrees, I tend more toward the lower 70's. We usually settle around 74.

|
The MS makes me INCREDIBLY susceptible to heat. When it gets above that, I literally can't function. Thought processes interrupted, I start trembling and my legs don't want to work.

I don't have MS, but I'm on a medication that makes me very ill if I get overheated: nauseated, weak and dizzy.
Fortunately, my AC must be efficient as hell. My electric/gas/water bills still run less than $100. I don't know how I'll cope with the increases I know are just around the corner.

85 during the day when I'm at the office and I turn it down to 75 when I get home. Since my apartment is older with some pretty good insulation, even in TX it's quite as bad as it sounds...

Especially with ceiling fans in most rooms. Otherwise I'd have to keep it lower. And if the humidity was higher, I'd probably drop the set point a few more degrees.
We turn it off when we're not home.

11. Ours has been around 72 |
|
The bad thing is, there is always someone home at my house at all times of the day...I don't work until second shift, so we leave the AC on during the day and then the parents and sister come home from work around 5:30, so then they keep it on for them.
If no one was home during the day, I am sure we would keep it around 78-80 until we got home.

I have no central AC, but my target temperature is 80. If it goes above that I will turn on another window unit or turn one up from low to high.

I'm fat, and I like it cool. Plus, my house is apparently very efficient, or else this would bankrupt me.
I set my air at 68. I've yet to see an electric bill over 80 dollars.
I really don't care if it costs me 200 dollars a month, I'm going to stay cool.
So there.

I have window units with not thermostat.
When it's like today (105 heat index) one or both run constantly. Bills are high, but I'm paying for the equivalent of my power consumption to be wind generated.

32. If I had it, probably about 80. |
|
Whenever I feel uncomfortably hot in my house, I look at the thermometer and it's at 80. But what's wrong with a little discomfort now and then?? It adds variety to life, and you appreciate the sunny cool days so much more if you've been sweltering. So no plans for AC here. Plus, it just heats up the outside.
Now, if I lived in the desert, I'd be singing a different song....

35. Somewhere around 77 to 78 unless I'm working around the house. |
|
If I'm cleaning I might turn it down a few degrees. If it's under 85 I try to open all of the windows when there is a breeze instead of cooling with the central AC.

I live in SD (University City area), and it's hard to justify to ever use the AC rather than leaving my windows open and just using the ceiling fan once in a while when it gets stuffy.
