A Major Rant About Holding Doors Open For Strangers! |
|
Have you ever held a door open for a complete stranger, and as they passed through it, not only did they not say a word to you, but they didn't even smile or make any eye-contact with you?
So I'm like Ralph the f**king door man here or something? Man this makes me want to go ballistic!
Many times I have secretly wished that I had let it slam right in their face, after the fact.

2. Ya know...9 out of 10 people will thank you. |
|
That 10th person will be visited by some random act of bad karma, so he or she will get punished somehow.
But, the thought of yanking them back through the door to take back your good deed is a fun thought.

I guess I'll say "you're welcome" in the future. That should get the point across.

3. Yes, that's happened to me. |
|
I've had people GLARE at me when I've held open the door for them. Part of me wanted to let go of the door in their face.
I share your anger when that happens. I don't expect them to cry tears of joy or anything, but a simple "thank you" would be nice.

5. Yes.... And it REALLY is irritating... |
|
But, what pisses me off just as much is people that are half a step ahead of you, who just let the door slam in your face, rather than holding it just seconds long enough to pass it off to you. This used to be common courtesy....?

6. What really gets me is... |
|
When you open a door for somebody and they pass through with about a dozen people behind them. Sometimes I feel like just letting the door go. Don't people realize they're supposed to hold the door as they go through?

Not that I've noticed. What is more likely to happen is to end up playing "after you-no after you" with another person intent on being polite.

11. Random act of kindness |
|
If you perform kindness only to receive gratitude, you will be disappointed many times. Just because the recipient of your gesture ignores you does not diminish the fact that you are being considerate to another. For that person and for others who will do the same, I will say "Thank you, kind sir/madam and God Bless.":)

I understand. I often do the same, like letting people change lanes, or go ahead of me in traffic. I know nobody else will.
Most of them smile and wave. A few act as though I owed it to them; it may well be that they were waiting there a long time, and felt that SOMEBODY owed them SOMETHING.
Still, I do hope all of them will eventually pay my random act of kindness forward.

events that would otherwise be overblown into large annoyances. When I let myself get irritated, it haunts me for hours. While if I chalk it off to my good dead for the day (or whatever), it is easy to put it aside....
Besides, I am honest enough with myself to know that I've probably been perceived as rude when I was very absorbed in something else, upset, late, or whatever......

Usually the person or people say "Thank You", but if they don't, I did the right thing anyway. Who knows what they have had to deal with that caused them to be absent-minded for the moment; maybe a sick spouse or child, or the boss yelled at them, or a friend died. I say live and let live.

Something where they don't know it's me and if they find out it does not count. Nothing big, just a little gift on a co-workers desk who's been going through a lot of shit and I sent some money to someone having money problems. It makes me feel much better about myself and the world in general.

I hold the doors open for people all the time and they're inconsiderate. It's like "Ok, fine, be that way asshole. See if I'll help you out again when you have a bag full of groceries in your arms and you need help with the door."
Recently, I have given up holding doors for people all together. People never do that for me when I'm struggling with crap in my arms and people just aren't considerate anymore.

"YOUR WELCOME" to a lady a while ago. She turned and apologized profusely. I felt sorta bad, she explained her husband had been diagnosed with cancer that day.
I sure felt like a heel. I don't care anymore if I am acknowledged or not. We don't know what people are dealing with.

maybe they're shy . . . maybe they're daydreaming . . . maybe they're high . . . maybe they have physical problems and can't talk . . . maybe they're too upset about their lives.
I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't take that much energy to hold the door for a couple seconds anyway.

Your stunt of saying "you're welcome" in a really sweet (non-sarcastic) voice worked perfectly.
In big cities, some people just plain don't make eye contact because that elicits further conversation that can get :scared:.

And it kinda frustrates me when others don't. And I'm also a sucker for the elderly. I love it when I hold open a door for and older lady, and she smiles at me and says thank you. There's nothing like the manners of a lot of the elderly around here. Duckie
