(I sound like I'm about 50.)
When I was in seventh grade or so (3 or 4 years back) I was a compulsive listener of Billy Joel's 52nd Street. My mom popped it in the car once, and I absolutely loved it. Every time we were in the car I'd listen to it, try to get her to take the long way home just to see if I could get the whole disc down in one ride. I'd remember where it left off and go to that track the next time I was in the car. I drove my mom apeshit for an entire summer: I would NOT accept any interference with my music. I knew the track listing cold, could sing every song line-for-line (not well, mind you, but I'd memorized the lyrics).
Eventually my mom got extremely fed-up and put another CD in the car, some crackpot business motivation shit thing she's still into. She's not a music freak like I am, so she committed the unforgiveable sin of putting the 52nd Street CD in the CD case of the crackpot business motivation shit CD rather than in its proper case. A new car and many years later I still have the 52nd Street CD case. The actual disc, however, has never been seen since that day; I can only assume it fell in between the seats in the old Volvo, and the local veterinarian, who now drives said car, is enjoying my 52nd Street.
Anyhow, I'd forgotten all about the damned album until today, when I found videos for "Zanzibar" and "Stiletto" on YouTube. I can stil sing "Zanzibar" almost word-for-word. And now I want my copy of 52nd Street back. I know now this isn't the best music in the world, but sheer sentiment is overruling me.
"Zanzibar" Billy Joel 52nd Street 1978
Ali dances and the audience applauds Though he's beathed in sweat he hasn't lost his style Ali don't you go downtown You gave away another round for free
Me, I'm just another face at Zanzibar But the waitress always serves a secret smile She's waiting out in Shantytown She's gonna pull the curtains down for me, for me
CHORUS I've got the old man's car, I've got a jazz guitar I've got a tab at Zanzibar Tonight that's where I'll be
Rose, he knows he's such a credit to the game But the Yankees grab the headlines every time Melodrama's so much fun In black and white for everyone to see Me, I'm trying just to get to second base And I'd steal it if she only gave the sign She's gonna give the go ahead The inning isn't over yet for me
CHORUS
Tell the waitress I'll come back to Zanzibar I'll be hiding inthe darkness with my beer. She's waiting out in Shantytown She's gonna pull the curtaains down for me, for me
CHORUS
