42. Giving birth.

Reg: Furthermore, it is the birthright of every man —
Stan: Or woman.
Reg: Why don't you shut up about women, Stan? You're putting us off.
Stan: Women have a perfect right to play a part in our movement, Reg.
Francis: Why are you always on about women, Stan?
Stan: I want to be one.
Reg, Francis: What?
Stan: I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me "Loretta".
Reg: What?
Loretta: It's my right as a man.
Judith: Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?
Loretta: I want to have babies.
Reg: You want to have babies?!
Loretta: It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.
Reg: But... you can't have babies.
Loretta: Don't you oppress me!
Reg: I'm not oppressing you, Stan, you haven't got a womb! Where's the fetus gonna gestate? You gonna keep it in a box?
Judith: Here! I've got an idea. Suppose that you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb — which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans' — but that he can have the right to have babies.
Francis: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister, sorry.
Reg: What's the point?
Francis: What?
Reg: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?
Francis: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression!
Reg: Symbolic of his struggle against reality.

86. The nexus of telephone, computer, music, camera. I have NO skills, knowledge, gadgets, services
related to any of these.
NO call-waiting/answering machine/call-forwarding. NO cell-phone/camera-phone/iPhone. NO iPod/mp3 player/personally down-loaded CD's. NO digital camera.

The terminology just confuses and baffles me.

Almost didn't graduate from High School because of my suckiness at math; I can do the basics, but little else...

95. Small talk.
I seem to lack a gene for it. When I'm around new people or acquaintances I seem to have two gears--"aloof" (not engaging in small talk at all) and verbose (crap...that's not small talk.) People either come away thinking I'm not friendly or, because of my train of thought, that I'm a little...odd.

99. Making small talk
I hate any type of sales work because I am lousy at small talk. I also cannot play baseball or softball because when I see a ball coming at me I duck.

104. I know what you mean about small talk.....
Every time I have to make small talk there are long, awkward, uncomfortable silent pauses. That's when I'm screaming inside and my brain tells me to say something but my mind goes blank.(I hate lawn parties).

108. Having a small store of standard questions is a big help
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 11:14 AM by Patiod
I found this out at a class reunion I attended when I was 1) unmarried and 2) unemployed. I was DESPERATE not to talk about myself, so the first question I asked everyone was "got any pictures of your kids?". I asked that even in response to the question "So, Pattie, where are you working nowadays?"

Man, ask people about their kids and you can't shut them up! Then, once the pictures come out, "What teams are they on?" "What do they seem to be talented in/enjoy most?" "Do they like those damned Harry Potter books? If not, what ARE they reading?"

No kids? "Where are you working now?" "What is that like?" "Is that what you went to school for?" "How'd you get started in something like that?"

Most people never got around to asking about me at all, which was the whole point.

Another great ploy (which is particularly effective in an incestuous little place like where I live)is to find out if they know anyone you know. They have to at least know the hosts/hostesses - how did they meet them? And if they don't know anyone, then that means they live somewhere you don't, and you can ask about that. What's their neighborhood like? School system? Crime in their area? Local politics? If they're your dopey neighbors, then why not ask about local politics or events: have you been following that whole brew-ha-ha about the new school/new development/new mall/gang of killer badgers, etc.? We're sick to death of our favorite pizza place - know anywhere good? What about restaurants? Know any good bargain shoe stores? (if you're a woman). If you're a guy, you can talk sports, but I'm not capable of that, other than complaining about the Phillies' pitching.

The other key is to NEVER ask a "yes" or "no" question. I interview people for a living, and you find out early on that "yes" or "no" questions are dead-ends - got to make them open-ended.
