I took an empty granola carton (the kind of waxy cardboard milk cartons used to be made of - looks just like a half-gallon milk carton), followed the instructions on it, and made it into a guitar by cutting a circle out of the front and securing rubber bands on it, raised by a pencil slid through them on the top and the bottom.
Then I made a tambourine by stapling together two paper plates filled with dry beans. The kids had decorated the paper plates with markers and crayons.
They now have a "guitar" and a "tambourine", have formed a band, and have been "practicing" all morning.
Gah.

3. My sister once bought my son this thing called a "one-man band" |
|
This is the sister with no kids, of course. It had drums, tambourine, maraccas - I don't remember what else but everything made an incredible amount of tuneless racket when played by a 3-year-old.

6. The funny part about this - |
|
is that they are surrounded by a pile of Barbies, trucks, remote control dinosaurs, and a computer with the Internet - yet they are playing with an old granola carton and two paper plates.

16. MG Jr. (3 1/2) has been tooling around in a cardboard box for days |
|
It's his train, apparently. He has several trains, including a wooden Thomas set, which I just set up in a new configuration on the train table, and (honest to Goddess) hundreds if not thousands of cars. But he's been in the box going "woo woo chugga chugga" all over the house.
P.S.: Can I send you Jr.'s kazoo? I've hidden it for now but it's only a matter of time before he digs it up again.

22. Way back when, my 2 and 4 year old children found a brand new |
|
box (economy size, of course) of tampons. When I discovered them, I was amazed at the number of things their imaginative little minds had come up with to do with a bunch of tubes and little wads of cotton! Needless to say, it was very hard to keep a straight face while I was trying to explain that they shouldn't get into Mommy's things.

I actually HAVE a cowbell, and they know it! It's hidden, but we don't want to give them ideas.

This is yours. Just be grateful that they don't have one of those recorder thingies. I hide those.

15. Just wait until they get a little older and have "real" instruments! |
|
There is nothing more wonderful than a kid just starting to learn the saxophone. And you have to let them practice at least an hour every day!!! ARGGGHHHH!

I was rather relieved when she chose flute instead.

21. My youngest plays trumpet... |
|
I finally caved on that one. I stood firm on the drums, though.
One of my kids' friends parents didn't, though (this particular son plays bass). And they don't live far from us so every couple of weeks now, my neighbors are treated to a concert. Bass, lead guitar and drums. At least they switch off. His neighbors, then ours, then his...

18. I have that same granola at home |
|
with the same instructions on the side.
Thankfully, I don't have any kids around, so that homemade music won't be inflicted upon me.
Patience. I hope they get tired of it soon. :)
