and I'm not sure hate is a strong enough word here.
Psst... Bill Gates... FYI
Just because there's a number that begins the line I'm typing in now doesn't mean that a number will begin the next line.
When I have to put tabs in one particular paragraph that doesn't mean that you should change my margins for me. Let me work with the tabs I just set, thank you very much.

Actually, it does the same thing in openoffice. You have to change the preferences. Type "turning off automatic numbering microsoft word" into the intergooogles and you will get an answer.

2. Just press ctrl-z when it does that. |
|
It will undo the auto formatting.

5. It operates on the theory that you're a mindless idiot |
|
Who has no idea what you want. I agree - I hate it, too. Mine somehow gets into "overtype" mode now and then - I have no idea how. I don't know why anyone would want that feature but I know I don't.

8. Also, the spelling and grammar check suck. |
|
It wants to throw commas in where they are not needed. Stops at words that are not misspelled, but are not in Word's dictionary.

11. The only way I've found to use Word properly is to go up into the options... |
|
and turn just about EVERY SINGLE (*&%ING OPTION OFF. :) Even then it's still a bit wonky, but it's not nearly as much of a pain in the ass.

13. Agreed. MicroSoft certainly has the Nanny/Nazi Template mastered. |
|
It's not just Word, though I have the same problems with that POS as you.
I went thru a real nightmare a couple of years ago, when I had to complete 3 HUGE technical manuals for a foreign customer. Somebody else started the job and tried to create a standard template. But they imported pieces of text from a gazillion different documents, forgetting to use the "Paste Special/Unformatted Text" option. So formats changed about every couple of pages. Or paragraphs.
Other "features" I love in Windows:
--Autoplay: the digital equivalent of a small dog humping your leg. One of the most worthless and irritating programs ever. Even selecting "Take No Action" doesn't help, since the stupid program continues to open itself up and present me with a list of options I don't want to do. Where's the option for "FOAD?"
--Photo-Nag: let's say I download a few hundred...nature pictures. I double-click on one to open it in PaintShop. But the ever-vigilant MS software knows it came from the net, so it pops up an irritating box asking if I REALLY want to open this picture?
No, I want to sit there and admire the filename, you worthless POS.
I hate this one because I have not figured out how to batch-select, and it pops up for EVERY PICTURE I try to open with a double click.

The early versions of WordPerfect certainly outperformed the early versions of Word, which I agree with the OP is annoyingly (and too often, incorrectly) "intuitive." I hate having to design my work defensively/pre-emptively.

don't have to use Word, or the others out there.
Been using WP for years, and while it is occasionally buggy and annoying, it does do just about everything I want it to do better than anything else I've tried.
MS Works and some of the freebies like AbiWord are actually pretty good for most things, but I wasn't able to do the kinds of newsletters and flyers I needed with them, and have no interest at all in dealing with Quark, InDesign, or the rest of that sort of thing.

18. I prefer a frickin' typewriter and white-out to Microsoft Word. |

Dear programmers of the world:
1. You have no idea what any given person is trying to accomplish with any given document. Quit assuming you do. 2. I would, along with most people, like to be able to simply type something without a bunch of mystery default crap springing into action. 3. All the "convenient" crap you guys are sticking into these programs actually makes it TWICE AS HARD to get most simple tasks accomplished.
Please please oh please...fewer "conveniences" and more simplicity!

22. PAPER CLIP GUY SEZ: "You appear to be complaining about Microsoft. Would you like some help?" |
|
That animation is as annoying as the toaster on the series {i]Red Dwarf that keeps asking everyone if they want some "yummy" toast. "No, I don't want any smegging toast!" "How about a crumpet, then -- a yummy, scrummy crumpet?"
Seriously, get yourself a Mac before you go insane.
Actually, my Mac also has MS Word. It's the only MS program I have. It's also the only one that won't quit when I want it to (or more to the point, immediately). I have to use Force Quit on it after I get the message "Word is not responding". Heh, "not responding" -- that should be the MicroSoft company motto.
But at least on the Mac version there's no Paper Clip Guy.

24. There are times I disagree with how Word 'thinks' for me too. |

One backspace and it reverts to how I was doing things.
The feature can be disabled, if you prefer. I still like the hints, even if they are an occasional annoyance.
