Did they remove the high dive at your local pool? (Assuming you have one) |

1. No. They removed the pool. |
|
After integration, they removed the pool in about 1975.

2. Pool in the town I grew up in closed too, not because of integration, |
|
but because of lack of funds to maintain it. It was sad. It was used by the local junior and senior high schools for their swim teams. I was on the swim team, and also swam in it all the time just for fun. Really bummed me out when I found out it had closed. x(
I used to want to do synchronized swimming, like my mom did when she was in high school.

They are now building some splash "pools" for the kids, but I don't expect those to draw a very big crowd.
Our county has NO publicly funded recreation of any sort for kids, to this day. I think that it all stems back to integration.

Unless you count Little League fields. Little League and girls softball is hugh here.
There isn't even a mall where they can hang out. They use Target for that. I'm not kidding.
This is the third-poorest county in Kollyforniya, in terms of return of taxes from the state.

Kid got his foot caught in a drain and drowned some years ago. Hasn't been open since.
There're the pools at the high school — swimming and diving — but the swimming pool only is open to the public only on select days during summer.

9. insurance got too high |
|
most of the swimming pools with diving boards are older and don't fit the modern specs required for a diving pool. The bottom of the pool has to be at least 10-12 feet deep and that depth has to extend further towards the shallow end of the pool. I used to be a diver and was a diving judge as well. The lawsuits brought on by head & neck injuries due to divers hitting the bottom of the pool have wreacked havoc on the sport. So now, if you don't have a diving pool or diving area that fits all the modern specs, the already high insurance is going to be astronomical. The expense is just not worth it to towns.

10. Yup. Our local pool removed all diving boards.... |
|
About ten years ago. The deepest part of this particular pool is only nine feet. I thought it was a shame, though. They used to hold the city championship games there.
