Asking for peaceful vibes for my dear MIL, who is in hospice... |
|
care.
Mr. Z. flew to CA yesterday to be with her and his sibs. She is in her mid-80's, suffering from dementia and old age.
She was a WAC during World War II, until she was discharged for getting married (!). Unfailingly courteous and genteel, she also had a strong, practical, no-nonsense Feminist streak. She has a wonderful sense of humor and has been a joy in my life.
She was taken to the hospital and ripped out her IVs and demanded to go home. Fortunately, her daughter and one son who still live in the area fought to get her discharged and back home where she could feel comfortable and safe.
I would appreciate it if my fellow DUers would send her thoughts and energy for a peaceful passing.
Thanks in advance. :grouphug:

I am not a hospice nurse,but had a patient who was dying on my floor.It's hard to watch a loved one die.Seeing them draw their last breaths in comfort ,with their family at the bedside,is the greatest gift that I,as a nurse,could be given.Bless you and your family.

Of course...
I truly believe that we should be allowed to die when our time has arrived...
Safe passage to your beloved MIL...:hug:
And my deepest condolences to you and your family during this time of loss...:hug:
Perhaps this little poem will be helpful:
Life is eternal;
And love is immortal;
And death is only a horizon;
And a horizon is nothing
Save the limit of our sight...

35. An update from Mr. Z.... |
|
She ate a bit this evening and was able to sit up and visit with all of her children around her. They all told family stories and laughed. She stated that she was very happy and thankful to have all of her children with her.
She still has her sense of humor. She said she has some trouble remembering people's names, but she still remembers the name of every pet she's ever had. :D
So, the good vibes, wishes and prayers are working. Thank you all!

Another update today: Mr. Z. and sibs were with her all afternoon. She is very frail, but her caregiver was able to get her into a wheel chair to sit up for a while to visit. She asked one of Mr. Z.'s brothers, "Who are you?" He answered, "I'm Charlie, mom." She said, "No. You're not Charlie." He assured her that he was. But, she wasn't distressed at all and still managed to have a sense of humor about the whole thing.
Even if she can't remember who each person is, she does know that they are her children and are there for her.
I hope I will be so lucky when my time comes.
Thanks for the support, Expat!

45. Not all hospices are wonderful - my FIL had KAISER hospice care when he was dying of colon cancer, |
|
and it SUCKED, like the rest of Kaiser in the Denver area does. They weren't even competent at managing his pain, dammit, and that's one of the main things that hospice care is supposed to do...

Was he at home or in a hospital setting? Did Kaiser "corporatize" (made up word, but I think you'll get it) the original intent of Hospice care?
I'm so sorry that that you're FIL suffered needlessly. :hug:

41. Hospice care is great.... |
|
Both my parents had it, though very briefly because both were very near death when it was started. Both only a few hours, but it was a great help.
When my mother died, the hospice brought two Catholic priests into give her the Last Rites before she died. They sent a Jewish rabbi to be with us when she died later that same day. He was the available clergyman at the time, and was a great comfort to us. Prayer is universal.
Best of wishes to you, your husband, family and mother-in-law.
Peace to all of you.

Hospice was there for my step-father when he died and they were very helpful.
My mom did the hospice training and has spent time with patients. She has been able to give me some insight into the process.
Thanks for sharing your experience with me. It helps to know that she is in good hands.
