How To Perform A Fast 180-Degree Turn With Your Car |
|
From The Worst Case Senario Daily Calendar
1. While in drive or a forward gear, accelerate to a moderate rate of speed. Anything faster than 45 mph risks flipping the car.
2. Slip the car into neutral to prevent the fromt wheels from spinning.
3. Take your foot off the gas and turn the wheel 90 degress (a quarter-turn) while simultaneously pulling hard on the emergency brake.
4. As the rear swings around, return the wheel to it's original position and put the car back into drive.
5. Step on the gas to start moving in the direction from which you came.
FYI, now get out there and give it a whirl.

1. And that "snapping" sound you just heard was the e-brake cable. |
|
If the vehicle is a Karman-Ghia, replacing that cable is gonna be a bear. And not the good kind of bear, either.
Been there, done this. Twice.

We used to do this in high school during the winter on the ice. Never tried it on dry pavement.

Always good to know - of course, remembering how to do it is a different story.

8. practice makes perfect |
|
and it works better, I found, on a rear wheel drive car. but it is important to have the emergency brake be able to lock the front wheels.

10. I've usually only needed the 180's on snow uphill |
|
Those occasions when I've gotten halfway up a narrow, snow-covered hill and realize I'm not going to make it. The procedure is a little different, though - you don't reallty need the e-brake. Just let the car slide, turn wheel and slam on brake at appropriate moment - but the timing has got to be right or you end up in a snowbank. :hi:

12. Stallone in Cobra did the best bootlegger, but they're easier to do |
|
from reversing then switching to forward gears.
