what on earth is this?

It's from a 'free to loving home' ad on craiglist. It says 'serious inquiries only'. I've never seen one of these before....is it a joke?

39. Day-um, it would take a serious commitment too. They can live to 23 years in captivity
Edited on Fri Aug-24-07 08:57 PM by havocmom
That's a lotta ugly

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/327.shtml

"Aye-ayes are the largest nocturnal primate in the world. They are also the only primate thought to use echolocation, which they use to find grubs up to 2cm deep in a tree."

"Life span
Their lifespan in the wild is unknown, but in captivity they can live for up to 23 years."

Oh, and they don't fuck up:

"Reproduction
During mating, aye-ayes hang upside-down on a branch, and the procedure lasts for about an hour. One infant is born after a gestation period of 172 days."

http://www.animalinfo.org/species/primate/daubmada.htm

This article mentions they are fearless of man. (That would explain their endangered status.)

A young one, perhaps. They are an endangered species. It is probably illegal to own them, at least illegal to import. They are nocturnal and there is a lot of superstition surrounding them in their native Madagascar

51. That particular Aye-aye is named Kintana
It was born and hand raised in Bristol Zoo Gardens, England. It was eight weeks old when the photo was taken. I only know this because I have an undated clipping of the odd animal from the Boston Globe.

Bristol Zoo is only the second zoo worldwide to successfully breed the endangered Aye-aye.

On a side note, I visited the Bristol Zoo thirty-seven years ago, and saw my first 'then' rare white Bengal tiger. Their breeding program has since helped populate zoos around the world with the white Bengal tiger.
