People who sleep with spouses/SOs/whatever--How do you sleep? |
|
My parents sleep with a wall of blankets, practically, between them, not because the living situation is tense but because my mother cannot bear to be held/touched/whatever in the night, especially now that she's cuckoo with hot flashes, et. al.--she says my father gives off way too much body heat. When my father is gone overnight I sometimes sleep in her bed for company (I'm an only child who's always slept alone, and I sometimes get neurotic as hell at night and like to know that another breathing human being is next to me), and I still sleep way the hell over, several feet away from her, despite the fact that I don't give off much body heat at all.
That said, I've known people who apparently sleep in each other's arms each night, every night, which is odd for me to wrap my mind around--my parents are not nearly that physical.
How do you sleep, usually?

1. When we first got married |
|
we slept in each other's arms. Then I got pregnant and suffered from insomnia. I got use to sleeping on the couch. After I had my son, all three of us slept in the same bed, but now I slept with my arm around my son. Then pregnant again, same thing, insomnia. My daughter refused to co-sleep, so I kept her in a bassinet by the couch, my son and husband slept in our bed.
Now five years later I can only sleep with my husband when it is winter. We live in Florida and it is too hot during the summer for me to sleep next to anyone. Also I work 11pm-7am, my husband works 6am-3pm, so we don't have the chance to sleep with each other if we wanted to.
When our kids move out, I'm setting up a room for myself. I love my husband dearly, but just sleep much better by myself.

We admitted years ago that we sleep better apart, so we each have our own bedroom, decorated the way each of us likes it. So, it can be fun to play "Your room or mine?"
We can still share the same bed when we have to, eg, in a hotel or whatever.

2. Haruka and I usually fall asleep cuddling |
|
If she's staying up later, she'll cuddle, then read in bed. We usually end up about a foot or so apart, but we'll move back together, if we wake up during the night. Then, she'll usually cuddle up with me for a few minutes again in the morning, before I get up for work, since I have work earlier than she does.
We also usually have cats stepping on our heads and demanding to be let in/out of the bedroom at least once during the night.

fall asleep while spooning and cuddle back up if i wake up in the middle of the night. at the very least, i like to be touching the person i'm sleeping with, even if it's feet or hands or something.
an ex of mine and i slept back-to-back a lot, not because it was a tense situation, but because his shoulder would hurt him if he'd spoon up beside me (i always have to be on the same side of the bed if i'm sleeping with someone)
that said, there was a summer when i lived with my then-so and i made him sleep in his own bed all summer because it was too damn hot to share a bed

34. wow... I have a totally different take on it |
|
mind you, I'd love to have someone share my life, and even my house
but somehow I've always known that a successful partnership, for me, would involve a bedroom big enough for 2 queen-sized beds.
after 43 years of sleeping alone, I can't begin to imagine not having the whole bed to myself.
(and as I creep towards menopause, I'm relieved to know that I can roll over to the other side of the bed where it's cool....)

9. We mostly just sleep on our own sides of our king size bed... |
|
usually turned on our sides or on our backs.
We'll sometimes cuddle briefly, but mostly we like to have the freedom to move around in our sleep without the other person hangin' all over.
Plus, MrShine is like an oven and gives off a lot of heat, so I can only handle that for a small bit of time, before it gets uncomfortable.
I'm a real tosser and turner, in my sleep. I change positions a lot. I gotta have my space!!

27. What is it with these hot guys? |
|
My SO is a furnace, too - it's like sleeping with a red-hot wood stove next to me. In the winter, it can be rather nice. Right now, it's a problem.
To answer WIMR, I like having him there but in some ways, I'd rather sleep alone. I slept with my 5 dogs for so long that I got used to being all over the bed because we slept like a pack of wolves, all draped over each other and occasionally getting up, turning around 3 times and re-grouping.
I'm sure my nightly gyrations are annoying for him. :P

13. We get complaints from guest who use our bedroom when they're visiting... |
|
We always want them to stay in the Master Bedroom because it has its own bathroom and Hydrotherapy Tub, and is quite large and charming...but the reports we get back are that the matress has a "dent" right in the middle.
You might infer from that information, that Mrs R and I sleep essentially in the same place as each other every night...and you'd be right. She calls it "sleeping inside of my husband."
However, you do not need to set that as a goal, OK? Everyone is different, and whowever they arrange to sleep is just fine, as long as it works for them. (Hey, I had grandparents who slept in separate twin beds all of their married lives, which I wouldn't do either, but it worked for them.)

My boss said lets take a ride. I need to get a new mattress for our guest room. We got to the store and he was talking to the salesman and said he wanted a mattress which got uncomfortable after three days.
I toss and turn so much and snore that I have my own bedroom for the sake of my wife's rest but I'm cleared for conjugal visits anytime.

19. We rarely go to sleep at the same time |
|
We snuggle in the morning usually. We have a King Size Tempurpedic Bed, so we don't feel the other rolling around. I sleep very hot, so I use a sheet only. I am her big hairy blanket. My wife uses blankets all year. In Winter, I use a sheet and a wool blanket and my wife likes a down comforter. So, we basically have two sets of sheets and blankets.

|
if it's a good nite we'll sleep together although we tend to sleep with our backs to each other because that's the most comfortable for both of us.
but usually within an hour of falling asleep I'm waking her up with my snoring and I usually end up in the spare bedroom.

25. we usually sleep pretty close - but |
|
My wife is always under a heavy blanket, no matter the time of year. In the winter, she'll also have a very thick quilt as well. In the summer, I'll only have the sheets on top of me, and in the winter, I'll actually get a separate light quilt out for my side of the bed because I'll wake up in a pool of sweat if I have the same quilt as my wife.

28. My fiancee can't understand that!! |
|
I'm the same way, because she's ALWAYS cold and I am usually a hot-sleeper. So, to solve the problem, I have my own sheet and light blanket, and she gets the quilt. It annoys her though, because we're not under the same covers. She fails to understand that I wasn't really sleeping when we were first dating and we did that though. She also fails to understand that she's a quilt hog and I can't get access to it if I actually want it unless I have my own.

For the first 15 minutes or so of the night, I lay on my back and TheProphetess lays on my shoulder. However, I can't stay on my back for very long, so after a short time I have to roll over on my stomach. If I wake up in the night (like I do pretty much every night) she lays on my shoulder again.

37. Every night, we start out cuddling |
|
He's on his back and I cuddle up on his right side to lay my head on his chest. I love to fall asleep that way. Then, we eventually turn over and sleep on our own sides of the bed, occasionally spooning or touching each other throughout the night. Once in awhile, he'll gently caress my hair to let me know he's on his back again so that I can revert back to our starting position. I think it's very sweet and comforting, the way we sleep. That said, we have a king bed in case we need our own space, too.

We'll shift positions and then gravitate toward the other. Sometimes I'll wake up and have trouble getting back to sleep - that's when it's more of a conscious decision to spoon him.
