They're having a freaking Fiesta at the Catholic Church across the street...
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 07:37 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
They have the Mexican Fiesta music blaring, people are roaring up and down the street in their way too loud hot rods and they have trashed the neighborhood. What the hell? I live on the 11th floor and still I can hear the music over my TV. People are fucking everywhere. I am just freaking angry. I took my dog for a walk, and they had thrown food all over the ground. It's hard as it is to keep Pru from eating everything off the ground, let alone them throwing food on the ground so she can get after it. Do you know how hard it is to dig something out of the mouth of a dachshund? Also, why, knowing that there are people living in the neighborhood do you have your music up that loud? It's ridiculous. I'm freaking angry. I wanted to take a nap this afternoon, and couldn't because the music was so loud. All we wanted to do today was relax.
And yes, I'd still be pissed if they were blaring anything. This is not an issue of who it is, it's the fact that it's happening.

1. It's a festival.
While granted they shouldn't be throwing trash on the ground, festivals tend to be boisterous and loud, and it's a holiday weekend. The only solution is to move out of the city or just live with it.

2. I still think it's rude.
The music didn't become a problem until after one. Before then it was on, but they didn't have it turned up all the way. So it's possible to do it and not annoy the entire neighborhood.

4. Maybe it really didn't get
kicked off until then. Maybe they changed over from piped in music to a live band. It isn't an everyday event and I'm sure it happens in cities everywhere that hold Italian festivals, Greek festivals, etc. Take a drive or visit friends if it's getting to you that bad. Me, I'd be joining in.

8. Right...
I smiled at a few people and they acted like I was an alien. This wasn't something they wanted everyone to join into.
It switched from live band to piped in. They didn't have to have the music turned up that loud. There's no reason to be rude to the community where you go to church. Plus they are trashing the neighborhood.

Oh please, I've been to a ton of these things, Catholic and non-Catholic. I don't believe for a second they looked at you, like you were an alien. These things are for the ENTIRE community.

3. It's not an everyday event. Don't get so worked up over it.
My neighbors behind me held a wedding at their house about 2 months ago. Loud music, DJ, the whole nine yards.

I wanted to take a nap. Couldn't. But, who cares? It's just one day. Not worth pissing and moaning over.

naps are important. Not everyone can handle noise and confusion all the time.
I can completely understand. Plus, I don't usually like other people's music, festival or not.

I totally understand what you both are saying.. people have every right to go about their daily routine without the slightest inconvenience. what right does a large community have to have a festival and frivolity when naps are to be had...

if it was me? id write congress..

7. I don't mind them having a festival....
That's fine...but why be rude to the people in the community? There is no reason that the music had to be THAT LOUD, nor did they have to trash the place. I don't leave my dog's poop in their yard, so they shouldn't leave their trash on my street.

10. People do have a right to some peace and quiet......
and where would we find that if not in our own homes?

But I'm just a stick in the mud and I want everybody else to be miserable. Well, if their sense of fun is interfering with my nap, my reading a book, my washing my floors, etc, etc.

Yes, people deserve peace. Some people are actually VERY sensitive to noise. (for instance, those with Asperger's Syndrome, etc)

20. Several points.
1) Are they parking in front of your house? I *hate* when my neighbors do that, despite that it's a public street.

2) You live on the ELEVENTH floor?

3) They are FUCKING --------LITERALLY?-----all over?

4) It's been going on all day?

21. Yes to all of them...
I live in a downtown 24 story build. Right across the street is a catholic church. There's a post office across the street directly from them my direction. They took over the parking lot. If anyone would have needed to go get their mail, they would not have been able to. They kept parking in the pay lot, but we didn't see anyone pay. They were parked all along the street, halfway blocking entrances here and there. It was ridiculous.

It literally went on from just after noon until it got dark. Thank God they stopped after dark, because if they had still been blaring that stuff I would have called the cops and would not have been very nice. Also, there are a lot of elderly people who live here, and some of them aren't in the best of health. I'm sure they loved trying to rest with the thump thump thump from the huge amps and the bass of cars constantly sounding.

Sounds like they were respectful and shut it down at dark. You are getting way too worked up over a cultural event. And, you could have walked your dog in another direction instead of right through the middle of the event.

Somehow, I doubt that. And exactly who is "them"? Catholics? Hispanics? Random pedestrians? It sounds more like your apparent xenophobia made you think they were looking at you like you were a freak. That, or they were reacting to your obvious anger towards them an their festival.

Oddly enough, I live in a big city, in a house that is directly across the street from a Catholic church that is predominantly Puerto Rican, so it isn't like I'm unfamiliar with this kind of situation. If you're going to live in a city, you really need to roll with the punches daily life brings a little better.

I see the people that were down there all the time. They are in and out. The Indian people are very friendly, always comment on Prudence and we talk. The hispanic people either pretend like we're not there or look down their noses at us as if we shouldn't be there.
I do roll with the punches most of the time, but I just feel that loud music and trashing the neighborhood is inconsiderate.

26. I live 2+ blocks from Osborne
where every year they shut down the street and have a huge 2 - 3 day street party with multiple live bands and thousands of people swarming around. All the way at home, I can still hear them. It really doesn't surprise me you can hear it on the 11th floor.
These things happen.
Usually rarely.
And don't often go for long.

34. A major part of some segments of the Hispanic community is SUPERLOUD PUBLIC MUSIC
THAT BLASTS ALL GODDAMN DAY SO THAT EVERYONE IN A MILE RADIUS CAN BE BLESSED BY IT.

I encountered it constantly when I lived in Harlem, mostly from people's apartments and cars, but occasionally from the Disciples Church half a block away that would have "fiestas" with music blaring so fucking loud we always had to leave, but not before calling the church and leaving really nasty comments on their voicemail about how completely unchristian it is to force other people to endure hours and hours and hours of really shitty music played REALLY FUCKING LOUD.

And lest anyone jump on me in some hysteric accusatory way to call me a "racist" or other bullshit, please note that I have it from the words of their very mouths that loud music is part of their culture; an essential part; a very necessary part of who they are. I was told that repeatedly when I would ask people - sometimes a block away, sometimes at 4:00 am - to turn their music down.

And also, before you jump on me with some emotionalistic knee-jerk screed, please note that I *already* said SOME segments of Hispanic community; not all. 'kay? 'kay.

guess what, I just shut the doors and windows, and put on some headphones.

As long as it's not a regular occurrence, and as long as it doesn't go on too late at night, it really shouldn't matter to you.

If you don't like dealing with other people, then go live in the country.
