Shep went over the bridge yesterday. |
|
Yesterday morning, (9/4) we had our sheltie, Shep, put down. He was an old dog who had developed breathing problems. It got to the point where the vet could do no more for him. I miss our buddy when we come home from work early in the morning. It was especially tough on my husband. He took the dog to the vet. Almost everywhere he went, the dog would follow. Everyone in the hardware store where my hubby works part time all loved Shep. They would feed him.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved dog, Shep...
They are our children, and it's hard to lose them.....
But we must help them die when it's time...
They cannot do it by themselves, and so they rely on us...
You did the right thing, hard though it was...
He had a very good life, and he knew you loved him...
May your memories sustain you during this time of grief...

Dear God, you have given us care over all living things; protect and bless the animals who give us companionship and delight, make us their true friends and worthy companions. Amen.
Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen. --Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"
Eternal Spirit, we bring you our grief in the loss of Shep and ask for courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for Shep who lived among us and gave us freely of his love. We commit our friend and companion Shep into your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen.

the best dog in the world. He had a mass in his lungs, had difficulty breathing and collapsed one day from heart failure.
I'm so sorry for you and your husband. :(

I know just what that is like. Its like they are still there in the house. I think maybe their little spirits just kind of stay around for a while. I always found it kind of comforting.
One of my dogs, Bandit, has been gone for a year and a half and I swear I still fell him lying beside me on the bed in the place he always slept.
I always figured that wherever dogs go when they die - that's where I want to go too. They are just so much nicer than people.

But it sounds as if Shep had a fantastic life and a caring home. What more can we do for our animal friends?
