Husband's movie on Sci-Fi Channel tonight |
|
MANEATER, starring Gary Busey, Sci-Fi Channel, 9 pm EDT. We're nervous since movies are seldom true to the book. Novel was first published by Tor in 2003 (in hardback) as SHIKAR, came out in paperback as MANEATER in 2006, published by i-books which promptly declared bankruptcy. Harper-Collins made the first offer on the novel, Mr. D turned them down because they wanted to totally change the plot. Now we'll see if the movie did what Harper-Collins wanted to do. Nervous, nervous. We may need hugs.
BTW, the DVD is already available in Thailand, with sub-titles. We have no idea why Thailand.

6. We hadn't seen the ads |
|
a friend's husband in Atlanta saw the ads, recognized that it was Mr. D's book. Otherwise, we'd still be waiting for it to come out.

5. The original plot was somewhat mystical |
|
The center of the story (as written) was a conflict between the tiger, who was trying to teach a young boy what it means to be a tiger, and the hunter, who was trying to teach the child what it means to be a man. Mr. D turned Harper-Collins down because they wanted him to juice up the tiger and make the book Jaws with Claws. Mostly, he was really writing about things that have ended up where they don't belong - a tiger in North Georgia.

I'm a writer, too, but not published yet. My first novel should be done by Christmas, though.

9. I'm sure the book is better than the movie. |
|
I'll be sure to tune in tonight. Like StraightStory, I'm tuning in mostly because SciFi's movies tend to be funny "B" type movies. Their series are much better.
Anyway, now I'll have a *reason* to watch!
Congrats to your dh. Here is a  just in case.

alas no cable so i won't get to see it
you know the book is ALWAYS better because a movie is visual, it doesn't get so much in people's minds as a book, just enjoy it for what it is
it will be exciting i'm sure!

14. Thailand has a booming DVD industry |
|
Unfortunately it is also where a lot of movies are bootlegged.

15. So disappointed in the movie |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-09-07 02:38 AM by Disorganized
They seemed to try to stay close to the book but mostly confused what was happeneing between the boy and the tiger, completely botched the end, made the hunter into a buffoon, and botched a really good, dramatic ending. Perhaps the hardest part of accept was the way the tiger was prograyed - you didn't come away with either understandong for his situation or admiration for him as creature.
I guess it's as good as we could have expected, but as Jack said, he's not sure anyone who hadn't read the book would have a clue about the movie, particularly the end. It's not something we'll watch again - won't even buy the dvd. He also feels he owes a deep apology to Col. Jim Corbett, who was a real hero - a national wildlife preserve in India is named for him - for the way they handled the Graham character.
We're now as mystified by the film industry as we've been by publishers. Jack wonders why someone would set out to create bad work - I say maybe they're so jaded they don't know it's bad. When I read a bad book now I wonder how good the book was before an editor got his/her hands on it. The whole thing has been an education.
The hardback - Shikar - is in a lot of libraries. You can also find it remainered on Amazon and there should be copies of the paperback - Maneater - around.
Edited for word left out
