How much (if any) recess do the schools in your area have? |

In Atlanta, they've built new schools without playgrounds (this was before NCLB). I guess they still have it here because the the playground equipment looks new. In the 90s, we got two 15 minute periods of recess each day(whenever it wasn't taken away as punishment), sometimes we got extra recess. If the weather was bad, we had indoor recess. I doubt they can give extra recess today. Some schools are tryi to disguise things like PE as recess.

1. Thirty minutes before lunch. |
|
It's too long. I liked the old two 15-min. recesses better. Kids don't know how to entertain themselves for 30 min. It's true! They start whining, bickering, tattling, and other annoying behaviors!
BTW, I have recess duty every day. In the winter we have indoor recess which is awful. They pack two classrooms into one and the kids "play" board games, blocks, draw, etc. It's pure torture for whomever is on duty.

2. Two to three a day, plus lunch |
|
Depending on whether they have P.E. that day. Lunch is 45 minutes - most kids get at least 30 minutes of that as play time, unless they eat really slow.
We have an awesome playground at the school. Have you ever seen a spacenet?

3. Don't some kids eat fast or not much to have more recess? |

The ones that want to get a kickball game going eat super fast. They zip through their lunch and head out to the playground at the earliest possible moment.
Unfortunately for them, they have to get clearance to go out by the main lunch room supervisor. The supervisor won't release them until they've been there for a bit more than 10 minutes.

8. We used to get a morning recess and then a lunchtime one either before/after lunch. |
|
In K-2 we seemed to get a lot of extra recess as "rewards" for behaving.
I used to spend recess swinging and, in 3-5, throwing snowballs at the icicles hanging from the roof during winter, whenever a teacher wasn't looking. Damn amusing.
