College Football and Tailgate Thread

A lot of good games on today, including three meetings of top 25 teams: USC @ Nebraska, Tennessee @ Florida, and Boston College @ Georgia Tech.

But if games between good teams doesn't float your boat, there is always Michigan vs. Notre Dame :D

As for my team, the Oklahoma Sooners will follow-up last week's dismantling of Miami with what should be a routine thrashing of Utah State (sorry Aggies).

So who does your team play?

1. My young Gators are facing the Vols today.
Unfortunately, I'm not expecting them to win today (defense is totally rebuilt from last year and the Gators are playing something like 17 freshmen), but it should be a great game anyway. Even if they lose, I still have the afterglow from last years National Championship to get me through this rebuilding year.

BTW, I LOVED the destruction of Miami last weekend.

94. You were right.
Our pass defense is horrible, yet he tried to rush 21 times for all of 37 yards. I would throw every down playing against Florida.

10. well, you do have some cause for optimism
Tennessee hasn't exactly torn it up this year, and you get the game at home, right? Either way, as you say, should be a fun game to watch :)

BTW, I LOVED the destruction of Miami last weekend.

Me too :toast: I expected the team to win, but maybe by around 20 ... winning by 5 TDs and change was a great surprise :D

it's not been a good summer/fall for the Longhorns off the field ... I'm sure they'll handle business against UCF, though--every game helps with a young offensive line like that ...

9. My alma mater is playing Idaho
We're 25 point favorites. 7pm Pacific, 10pm Eastern on Fox Sports Net. These late starts are so great for national exposure.

It's like I said before the start of season, we're not going to know anything about WSU until after the fifth game. I expected us to be 2-2 after the first four games with losses to Wisc and USC and wins over San Diego State and Idaho. So we will see.

Fifteen games on the cable today and I don't even have a sports package.

18. There's a lot of history behind it
The schools are only eight miles apart so it's at least a geographic rivalry.

Plus our DC (and our HC's best friend) left during the off season to take the Idaho head coaching job after Dennis (the Menace) Erickson left for ASU. So that adds a little intrigue.

The traditional Battle of the Palouse was suspended for about twenty years when they were Div I-AA.

The losers (Idaho about 80% of the time) used to have to walk the eight miles.

50. Amazing. They covered the spread ...

When OU is covering the spread, they're cookin' with gas. :-)

Can't believe Bradford is only a freshman. If his line holds out and he doesn't suffer too much of a sophomore slump, OU's gonna be tough for awhile.

Unless something bizarre happens to USC or LSU, I'm afraid it's going to be a tough year for them in the polls no matter how good they are though. Looks like the only Top-25 competition they're going to have is Texas and Texas A&M.

54. hey RoyGBiv!
How ya been? :hi:

Bradford is looking pretty amazing so far, especially for a freshman--helps to have that talented, experienced offensive line along with his stable of running backs and wide receivers. You're right about the polls--the Big 12 is pretty clearly down right now. Texas was lucky to escape today, OSU got thrashed last night, A&M has looked shaky--maybe the north winner will be ranked for the championship game, but other than that there won't be a lot of impressive opponents on the Sooner schedule.

I think they'll still be all right if they win out, though, because USC is going to have a pretty rough time going undefeated this year ...

Even if they win today, though, what I'm thinking is that they'll have a heckuva challenge in late October when they play at Oregon. Now how fitting would that be, if Oregon were to repay us for last year's debacle by knocking off USC and opening up a spot in the BCS top 2 :)

Went there to give a historical talk thingy and went to the Oregon game hoping for some measure of revenge for that OU-OU game with the squishy-brained refs last year by watching the Ducks go down.

That was a horror show. It looked worse from the stands than it did on television.

All Notre Dame would have had to do in this game was slap together a spread offense. Michigan can't cover it.

They won't get whooped. Anyone who thinks so has never been to a game at Memorial Stadium. We simply do NOT get our asses kicked in Lincoln. We rarely even lose there, but anytime we do, it's a close game. Just ask Texas.

Besides, we didn't get whooped in LA last year, and we're a far better team now.

I'll be happily surprised if we WIN, but we will NOT get our asses kicked.

I don't think it's nearly as much of a given as the LA newspeople seem to think it is.

It's been a LONG time since USC's played in Memorial Stadium. Nobody fairs well in Lincoln. Nobody.

Fares well! :spank:

:P

Those LA newspeople are just being homers - no different than the newspeople in Lincoln. I am sure they are just as cocky.

I don't think it's a given - just being objective here. Overwhelming #1 seeds are much less likely to be upset. So my prediction is more measured and cautious, since I have no dog in this fight, other than my regional home turf.

I found out through my alumni newsletter that since I left Seattle, my college team plays our biggest rival in Seahawks Stadium every October, called 'The Battle in Seattle'. Both schools are 100 miles from Seattle, so it's a cool idea. Wish they started that when I lived there - would have been great fun. My school hasn't produced that many pros (the most notable being current Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna), but they were a powerhouse when I lived there, ranked #1 nationally (same tier as Appalachian State, btw), and might have given a few Division I teams at least a reasonable contest if given a chance. But that was 15 years ago, lol.

Ah well, enough nostalgia.

You should be over here watching the HD 52-incher! :P

103. Maybe, but...
USC is just that good (not gloating, because I would much rather see the UW or UCLA dominate the Pac-10 and that looks very unlikely). It looks like the Huskers did pass a lot in the second half, and they did use every second on the clock instead of rolling over, and even got a few decent scores in, but the Trojans just have too many weapons in their bag, and the result was pretty much what I expected - not a huge blowout, but not a close game either.

My vote for the best game of the day was Arkansas and Alabama - I don't care for either, but from a purely good game perspective, it had all the drama and drive of a great college game.

Now as for being mean... I have to ask: Was that not embarrassing how Brent Crustburger and his lackey fawned all over Husker fan Clarence Thomas?? :puke: "He's just like any other fan!" No, he is GOD, and we must worship his fascist judicial philosophy!

The coverage of the game genuinely sucked. We almost quit watching.

I didn't think Alabama would have anything left in the tank for that, given how dismally they played for most of the second half ...

#15 Georgia Tech lost too, so I guess five teams in the top 16.

93. Friday night?
Damn, that's gonna be a hard one. I'm now teaching high school so I have the whole "Friday Night Lights" thing going on, since we have a hardcore football thing going on here. In fact, our QB is going to OU next year--how cool is that?

But looks like the Sooners are pushing forward hard this year. I can't wait to see how it all plays out. It's weird not being around to see it in person.

96. Cool! Is it Landry Jones?
I saw on an OU message board that we got a commit from a good prospect in New Mexico, and I remembered his name because it seemed like such a great name for a Sooner QB :) Is that the same guy?

It's cool that you're teaching HS now--how do you like it? Are you teaching English?

It's weird not being around to see it in person.
I know--I always feel a little homesick seeing the stadium on TV :)

Landry Jones- is that not the perfect football name?

I think he'll be a good commit - I hope the OU team will be good for him. I wish I could say more. He's very talented, that much I can say.
