12. Ok, let me take a whack at explaining... |
|
This is a discussion of the current topic du jour in GD, in the form of a COPYCAT of a thread which was discussing one of the few truly great Episodes of "Star Trek: TNG".
In that episode, Picard's life depended upon establishing communication with a new race. Although the "Universal Translator" was translating all their words properly, they were still unintelligible because their species never said anything DIRECTLY- all information was passed in the form of stripped-down, bare-bones CULTURAL REFERENCES.
For example: Suppose (were I one of them) I showed up somewhere with a black eye, and someone asked me how I got it...
And suppose the answer was: a client at my job had been breaking a rule; he had refused my request that he obey it, first becoming argumentative and eventually escalating to physical violence which resulted in his arrest and removal.
I would convey ALL of that information by simply saying, "The jobless man- his porn denied".
I hope that clears this up a bit. :)

That form of communication is simple, but requires EVERYone using it to know EVERY reference. The possibility for a mis-understanding is huge.

16. You couldn't have said it any better! |
|
That's why the crew of the Enterprise had such a hard time understanding. They heard the words, but out of the cultural context, they were nearly meaningless.
Incidentally, I am starting to get twitchy for the final season of Battlestar Galactica. "Razor" comes out in 2 months, and the season premiere is in late January. it's going to be a SPECTACULAR season.
