Are all country music fans anti-intellectual?
I just heard the strangest country song on the radio:

Don't come home a thinkin'
With lovin' on your mind

:wtf:

4. Admittedly there are a number of dumb country songs

but I did actually like Garth Brooks' "We Shall Be Free" which actually stands against things like bigotry, poverty, pollution, etc.

I actually play it sometimes when I feel on the verge of loosing hope in the world.

Some of the lines by Garth Brooks from this song:

"When the last child cries for a crust of bread, when the last man dies for just words that he says."

"When the skies and the oceans are clean again."

"When we are free to love anyone we choose, when this world's big enough for all different views, when we all can worship from our own kind of pews."

"When nobody walks a step behind."

"When there's only one race and that's mankind"

"We shall Be Free!"

addy! I love that song. I must have played it a dozen times on the day Dumbya got put into office to remind myself that not everyone shares Dumbya's values or his so called definition of "freedom" which isn't really freedom at all! Also to keep the faith that real freedom is still something that many people still believe in and are striving towards.

I took my children (9 and 10 at the time),
to his show here in Tucson that same tour.

"Changes" that he wrote after the Oklahoma City bombing too. He's got a lot of talent and heart, I think.

That is great that you got to see him in concert with your kids.

9. It's not that they're anti-intellectual, it's about where they start from, not the heights they're
threatened by. Their fight-or-flight mechanisms are only that, mechanisms. The concept of the choice of reactions, and of a superior mode of living is unknown to many.

Although the photos that led to this comment are hilarious, it's still telling.

"...No band in all of my carrer as a musician would have been able to get me to wear any fucking clown costumes to go and play a gig. And it aint because I play country music. With that said, it's a shame these guys could'nt meet up with some country boys so they could get a good ole country style ass whoopin'".

Comment 2.

Um, it's country boys like that who inspire others to rebel in such ludicrous fashion. Don't they know that they're responsible for it?

I grew up listening to country. Then around middle school, which would have been early to mid nineties, it started sucking hard and I listened to the oldies station for a bit and then found this station playing Nirvana and Green Day and now my music collection is mostly 90s alternative, but with some of the old country classics.

Country used to be great. And there still is some decent stuff, I bet. You'd just have to find it online because hardly anything decent gets played on the radio in any genre these days. Maybe the corporate music suckage just started with country.

And having been reminded of why I need breaks from DU within an hour of returning from a long break, I am going away again now. Maybe one day I'll come here and it won't be filled with hate for people who happen to live in the South or happen to listen to country or whatever?

Look up Nickel Creek. Here's a video to get you started.

taterguy. I would think you would know our country music heritage better than that.

Of course, that's the Loretta Lynn song "Don't come home aDRINKIN' with lovin' on your mind.."

I wouldn't call Loretta ignorant. At least not now. The Dixie Chicks, neither. Nor Johnny Cash. Nor Merle Haggard. Dwight Yokham. Willie Nelson, of course.

There's plenty of smart country to be had.

20. Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson
Trisha Yearwood, Gretchen Peters (though she's a better songwriter than singer)... We've had our share. Then there are those who don't fall into a category, but are part country: Robert Earle Keane, Lucinda Williams, John Prine, Steve Earle, Flaco Jimenez, Doug Sahm.

24. The thing that gets me
Why is it called "country" music? What ever happened to "hillbilly" music?

My father was a farmer and I grew up in the country. When I was a little girl, I thought that cities were invented to give people who didn't live on farms a place to live.

But I am not particularly fond of so called "country" music....

(I especially hate when it is played very loudly on the jukebox in an otherwise pleasant bar.)

27. No more than your average rock fan - most of America is anti-intellectual asstards.
Country probably has a higher percentage of its fan base that's ignorant and anti-intellectual compared to other forms of music, just because of where the music tends come from; but it certainly has no lock-hold on anti-intellectualism, not is it inherently an anti-intellectual art form (though as performed by a great many performers, it certainly is - racist, bigoted, misogynistic, and worse - but that's not an inherent part of country music).

32. the pop-country base is authoritarian
I think a lot of bluegrass fans aren't so lockstep though.

Not all country fans, of course...I am very much a fan of some of the more traditional country acts and the traditional musicians but there is an authoritarian mindset that the industry markets to.

36. what constitutes a "fan"?
I mean I like some country, not so much other

I like a LOT of music most music as a matter of fact, but I do listen to country and some of it is dumb as hell and some of it is good in my opinion.

I don't think those are the actual words of that song

I dunno if fans are anti-intellectual, I think that the reality is that country music is a style that is originally from the country.

The roots of that are deep and a lot of the fans have gone the conservative direction mostly due to religious influences.

Perhaps that is an anti-intellectual bent...

The songs vary though and there are some musicians in the country genre that are every bit as liberal as your most liberal rocker might be.

If it comes from Nashville, trash it, except for possibly BR5-49 and a few others.
