1. Canada honors its dead; we hide ours |
|
CBC is the source of the finest journalism in the Western Hemisphere.
Thanks for the heads-up.

2. I've been in Canada for about a month now, |
|
and that is one thing I have noticed. The war dead are not just numbers here, but are treated with the respect they have earned.

The press is forbidden from displaying images of the coffins coming home.
I'm sure you hear us drone on about 'land of the free' when we sing the national anthem at hockey games. Hint: it's not exactly true anymore.

7. But our flag will still bear, dammit! |
|
Funny story about national anthems: we had a gal who worked at our company who was a total American Patriot Freak. Her cellphone (clad in red white and blue) chimed the national anthem when it rang. I said to her "Cool! I want one that sings the national anthem and follows it with O, Canada."
She got mad at me, but any hockey fan should appreciate the humor of that. :D

8. Minnesota Public Radio broadcasts As It Happens |
|
and on Tuesday night, I was struck by how the death of the Canadian soldier was treated. They interviewed his commanding officer and members of his family. He was a person, not just a number.
BTW, Minnesota DUers, you can hear As It Happens (CBC's counterpart to All Things Considered) on KNOW-FM 91.1 (or whatever MPR's news station is in your neck of the woods or prairies or muskeg) at 10PMCST.
