another post designed to make other people look stupid after pointless argument |
|
you see, even though this has been discussed and argued over every day here, I thought I'd start another thread to "make a point."
This is a copycat thread of sorts. Enjoy feeling superior.

3. Things get discussed and argued over |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 10:21 AM by skygazer
because people decide to discuss them and argue about them. The simplest way to avoid that is to ignore those threads and not enter into discussion and argument in them.
But I suppose its more fun to do so and then start another thread.

Those kinds of threads are done often too. I didn't see you complaining then!

or compared you to a terrorist in the pig thread. Or suggested that you stay in your 'own' forum, for that matter.

9. I never suggested that someone did. |
|
My point is don't say someone has a right to post something controversial and then bitch about it the very next day because this time you disagree with the topic.
Yesterday, I think people were feeling looked down on and some of it was very condescending. No different than today. Except that today, that very person decides it is unfair to post.
And staying in your own forum was simply a suggestion if you wanted to avoid flame-bait.
And I do have a huge problem comparing human meat to animal meat. Yes, us meat eaters might as well become Jeffrey Dahmer!

12. "Controversial" isn't my issue. |
|
While I don't particularly agree with starting this thread, there is a big difference between "feeling looked down on" and being called a cultist and a terrorist. The latter isn't "controversy," it's bashing, but it's accepted.
I wouldn't make a comparison like the one you're suggesting. I also won't "stay in my own forum"--I don't post flamebait.

13. if a person uses violence or intimidation to make a political point |
|
they are a terrorist.
if a person adheres to doctrines unthinkingly, without reflection, or to achieve purity, they might express cult-like tendencies.
other than that, i don't know very many everyday people who fall into that scheme.

What does violence or intimidation have to do with me? What does cultism or fundamentalism have to do with me? Is that what veganism to you?
Why is it considered fine to ascribe those characteristics to a whole group of people, me included, that you don't know or understand?

that's why we speak about ideas and not people.
and what i had posted can apply to vegans as well as aa'ers, anti-abortionists, RWers, liberals, etc.

we were talking about calling people cultists and terrorists because they're vegan.

First, the pig thread would have done better in the veggie forum. There would likely have been no snarky replies. Really any thread about pitbulls, vegans, spanking, loud kids, etc. will end up as flame-bait. Those of us who have been here a while all know that.
Secondly, I don't agree with calling someone a cultist or terrorist at all (unless they are), but this person was basically equating meat eaters with cannibals and that is bashing too. Just my opinion.
My point is when you start a thread that you know is going to be flame-bait, then you are going to get all kinds of mean replies. I am not saying it is right, but that is how it is.
And this thread is just that. FLAME-BAIT!

17. I think the pig thread was started with good intentions |
|
and the OP apologized for offending anyone. I doubt that people will ever stop posting threads like those, because there will always be new vegans. I also doubt people will ever stop posting threads like "Should vegans be fed to bobcats?" because there will always be people who think that we're just hilarious. Those of us who've been here for a while all know that, too.
Again, I wouldn't make the comparison you're talking about. I think it's hurtful and counter-productive. Thank you for disagreeing with calling me a cultist or terrorist.
I'm going to try to leave this alone, not because of our conversation, but because I think the thread should die.
I think we agree on that much, anyway.
