Do your cats like human food?
My two boys won't eat anything but cat food

But Daniel, my 23-year-old calico will eat anything you are eating...don't EVEN try to brush her off for a snack...she is very persistent

1. My cats (and the dog) go insane over turkey.
It's like a freakin' drug for them.

I should probably send them to Turkey-holics Anonymous.

She's a spud lovin' fool.

Especially chips though.

A crinkling potato chip bag will roust her out of a dead sleep and bring her running from the far side of the house.

41. I used to have a kitty that loved fast food
I think it was because we removed her from the bottom of a dumpster at a taco bell. She was feral and hid a lot. but whenever we brought home fast food, and started to unwrap the food, she would be right there waiting for her share.

I've seen them lick the salt off of chips, leaving a soggy beige blob for me to clean up.

I had a cat when I was younger who loved cheese puffs. Half cat, half Cartman.

9. My cat tries to eat my food all the time
He'll actually swat the plate with his paw to get it to tip and spill food (I never eat at the table--always on the couch watching TV--and if he's out of his room when I'm eating, it's necessary to play a game I call Not For You, wherein I try to hold the plate out of his reach). He'll eat (or at least stick his nose into) practically anything.

Don't feed a cat pork, onions, or chocolate, though. And I think raisins and grapes as well, I know they're harmful to dogs.

One of my two cats, Smokie wants to try anything I am eating. I actually call it the Not Kitty Food Game as in thats what I am telling her all the time. My other cat will occasionally sniff at my food but she is not the piggy that her sister is.
Hands down though she LOVES popcorn and knows the smell really well. While its popping in the microwave I can see her sniffing the air in anticipation.....

14. oh yes
And, by the way, please introduce your boys!

Chester, my darling departed elder tabby, was nicknamed "the chipster" because he always had a nibble of a potato chip if they came in the house. Other favorites of his included cheese doodle bits, ham, cantaloupe, hamburger bits, and pizza crust. One of his oddest fancies was fresh corn silk. He would go mad for corn silk.

Miss Figgy, my dear departed elder calico, was a fiend for donuts. If there was a donut in the house, she was on it.

Keiko, our current boy (a marmalade tabby), likes bits of banana, bits of buttered whole wheat toast, anything creamy like yogurt or pudding, and cracker crumbs. He'll eat tomato soup and hummus too.

Why not? It's just tidbitty snacks.

Chester was hilarious about food. The moment the shopping bags came in the door, he was all over them, cataloging what we'd brought home. RIP, Chessie.

Those beautiful gold eyes. She used to sit on my computer monitor and never take her eyes off me, for hours and hours and hours. Wherever I was, she was there. The second I would sit on the sofa, she was there. She had no life, obviously!

16. I once walked into the room to find the cat
licking the butter that was out on the table. He ate a good portion of it too. Gross!

(That was a cat I had in high school, haven't been able to have a pet since.)

He also used to sit in the chair next to me while I ate cereal in the morning, waiting for his opportunity to drink a bit of the milk. I used to give him the tiny little bit of milk that was left after I was done. He'd paw at my arm until I gave it to him.

And sometimes the paw is quicker than the fork -- they've snatched food right off my fork before I could get it to my mouth. They like the expected stuff, like ham, chicken and salmon, but they are also extremely fond of buttered toast.

28. I have a dog that lusts after tuna
She seems to hate peanut butter, though. I thought dogs went for that.

I have a cat now that doesn't seem to like anything I feed her. As soon as I fill her bowl she gives me an "are you expecting me to eat that?" look. She still manages to be overweight. Either she's hitting the dog food when my back is turned or she's absorbing calories by osmosis.

23. You cannot leave milk unattended with Chaucer around.
He will stick his head in the glass to get to it--AFTER he climbs on the dinner table (not anything he will do if you are in the room.) I gave him that cat milk one time thinking it would be a huge treat and he HATED it. Caught him one time with a paper cup of milk stuck on his head from when my daughter didn't drink it all and ran off to play...

Chaucer will almost climb my leg if I am working with shrimp or smoked salmon (raw shrimp is his favorite, but cooked shrimp is not far behind.)

He loves chicken broth as long as it is fresh. If it comes out of a can or carton it is not interesting to him. Same thing for fish stock.

I have never seen him act interested in any other foods--so I am assuming his palate must be limited.

27. I know a big fat tabby...
...who will stand below a pull-out breadboard in the kitchen and blindly reach up with his paw to snag whatever might be there during meal prep. He's exceptionally tall, and can do it.

The same cat one time was playing in the kitchen with a catnip mouse and flipped it up with one paw in a sort of right hook shot and threw the mouse right into the middle of an omelet on the stove.

31. Depends on what's being fixed...
Edited on Sun Sep-30-07 03:39 AM by Aya Reiko
The Late Flower (a.k.a. Lardbutt, Thunderfoot, and the big black thing comatose on the bed) didn't use to demand scraps from the table... until she saw the dog get scraps, then she insisted that she get her share. Insisted, as in she'd imbed her claws into your leg if you didn't pay enough attention to her. Her favorites were anything that used to swim or fly or was squeezed from a cow. Plus her ears were well attuned to the sound of a can being opened. Start opening a can, regardless of what it is, and she'd be there.

38. Feta cheese
Brianna, the part Maine Coon calico, loves feta cheese. I figured it would be too pungent for her, but whenever I fix something with it, she's right there chirping for a snack.

Pippy is pretty content with her crunchies, though she does go start singing when I open a can of tuna.

I had a cat years ago who ate cantaloupe and honeydew melon and another who ate cheese puffs.

40. My Sunday Girl, who will be 15 years old in October,
and has inflamed bowel disease now, loves anything spicy. If it has garlic, chili powder, or tomatoes in it, she is like a vacuum cleaner. With her stomach the way it is, we have to really work to keep her form making herself sick.

I do slip her a tiny tad bit of Doritos from time to time when I have them, though, because that has to be her all time favorite human food next to homemade fish, which she still gets too. She loves pizza, homemade chicken and rice, lasagna, chili, you name it. If she can get to it, she's all over it. She's something else too. She will create a diversion for the other cats to get their treats when they look the other way too.

49. Their intestines swell up and they cannot pass their
food through their digestive system. They have trouble going to the bathroom because of that. They also tend to get sick on the stomach a lot. She is on the Science Diet Sensitive Stomach dry food because it doesn't irritate her stomach so bad.

She does have some trouble with holding her food down sometimes and I have to keep human food sharing to a minimum. I can't deny her a taste of her most favorite dishes on occasion though. She loves them so much.
