Poll question: Poll - Blasters, Stray Cats, or ShaNaNa?
AN update of a poll from a couple months ago. The Blasters performed original tunes, were more prolific, and were a little more energetic. Cats had quasi-legend and likely HoF'er Brian Setzer. ShaNaHa was mostly cartoon, but my cousin went to their shows, wore his t-shirts like Bowser, etc. So there was a following there.

My vote goes to the Blasters narrowly over the Cats, with ShaNaNa a distant 3rd.

9. The Blasters!
I saw Dave Alvin last year - he freaking rocked.

I like the Stray Cats, too, but not as much as I like The Blasters.

Marie, Marie is a classic!

10. First time I heard "Marie, Marie"
was the cover by Shakin' Stevens. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this really great band had originated it - and so much more.

Shakey's no slouch, though. He also plays a great cover of "Little Wild One" by Marshall Crenshaw.

12. Yes! The Blasters!
I heard them live (hate to say that it was more than 20 years ago), and they were *great*.

6. Blasters
The only real rockabilly band of the bunch. I had tickets to see them a few months ago. They were to open for the Rev Horton Heat. At the door, we were informed that the Blasters wouldn't be making it. I wanted half my money back. I heard they broke up. :(

7. The Blasters broke up again?
Stay tuned for the next episode....

They originally broke up when Dave Alvin left his brother Phil & the other guys for a solo career. He's done well, performing solo or with a band. The Blasters hired another member & started touring. A few years ago, the Blasters played at a Houston club one night; the next night, Dave played. Those of us who went both nights figured it was a plot by the Alvin brothers to get more money out of us. Both shows were excellent.

Dave re-joined The Blasters temporarily for a few shows as "The Original Blasters". The website (D Alvin/Blasters) indicates no shows immediately upcoming for The (New) Blasters--so maybe the new group has re-broken up. Or maybe everybody's taking a breather.

I'd link directly to the website, but I'd rather let you look it up on the link page of the Perceval Press:

http://percevalpress.com/recommend.html

The Perceval Press is Viggo Mortensen's project. His ex-wife, Exene (formerly of X) plays with Dave & her other ex, John Doe, in the ongoing side-project, The Knitters.

Kinda like a soap opera, but with a better sound track!

(I saw the Stray Cats do a show back in the day. They were not as "significant" (ahem) as The Blasters, but they had a good beat & you could dance to them.)

13. As good as the Cats were, I had to go with the Blasters.

Musically, the Alvin brothers were far more diverse than Setzer and Co.

As for Sha Na Na...the less said about that group, the better!
