suggestions on how to tired a puppy out are welcome
it's been many many years since we've had a puppy. They are cute, cuddly and have lots of energy...lots and lots of energy....more energy than a 4 year old on a sugar high...

we go to the dog run and run around, chase sticks, scamper, wrestle...
inside we chase the chews, the balls, play tuggy... jump off the bed, cry to get on the bed so we can jump off the bed again... chase the cats, whine when the cats chase us back, wrestle with the big dogs...

any suggestions on how to tired a puppy out are welcome... I'm too tired to think about it... lol

1. For a couple of months, you are DOOMED.
We are cursed with Herding Dogs (Corgis) and they remain puppies in spirit for about 2 full years, if the LIVE that long.

12. Couple of months?
We've got a 12 yr old Cattle Dog who constantly has a ball or toy in his mouth. Until this spring we used to play frisbee every day but the vet said we needed to stop.

We have six dogs and all but one are like this. I live in either doggie Heaven or people Hell...

13. Another herding dog!
We've got 3 corgs, but Bridgette has cooled off a bit at 6 going on 7. Charley is still a little Radical but Vinnie is DOG NUTS CRAZY. Well, he's only 1.25 years. Maybe we won't strangle him!

14. We have two cattle dogs
and four mixed breeds. After they're gone I may try a border collie. I do like me some herding dogs.

15. Tovah's feet are growing faster than she can control
gave a dog cookie last night, she flips it in the air and then goes to pounce on it - but her feet are bigger - ends up "kicking" the cookie across the floor

so she runs after it and as she is trying to pick it up - her feet hit the cookie, sending it sliding even further...

on her 3rd attempt to catch the cookie she slides past it, backend flops sideways and she bangs into the wall, front legs scrambling to retain balance hit the cookie sending it carooming off of another wall..

her 4th try was more successful, as the cookie finally lodged itself between a scatter rug and the celler door

26. My Boston is 15 months now and rowdier than when I got him...
He needs at least an hour a day or he's out of control.

Swimming works well, but I have no place for him to swim in the winter.

3. know anybody with a puppy for yours to play with?

we recently adopted 2 10 month old dogs. they tire each other out playing with each other - much more so than from walks or playing with us.

7. no, but I've been surfing the web for one of those
robot/toy dogs... seriously considering it, but I'm afraid our dear little one will destroy it

a few things Tovah has learned this week:

- I'm still small enough to get through the gate and eat the cat food

- Shredding newspaper and magazines is fun

- Chasing the old cat is fun...sometimes...not fun when she chases me

- I can BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK! BARK!

5. What are you doing in my house?! That sounds very familiar.
Our puppy is just an enormous ball of energy. What works best is if she and our other dog get into a really good play session. Running around the yard, jumping on each other.

Do you ride bike? There is a K-9 Cruiser you can get. We used to have one for our Dalmatian. It's a bar with a lead that attaches to the back wheel of a bike. Just hook the pup up and peddle away. It's great for you and doggie. Unless doggy is afraid of wheels...but as a puppy, I would doubt that.

9. Here's a good idea
I noticed in your previous outside pics that pup has a nice sturdy collar. Acquire one of those smaller rope toys (the ones with the knots on either end). Get him interested in it. Then, insert one end through the collar under his chin. Make sure the collar isn't too tight with the rope in there. He'll spend all day chasing this new attachment. Quite entertaining for the new parents, too.

Of course, don't leave it in his collar unsupervised, and I wouldn't do this outside for too long.

11. She loves her rope toys
little one is ok some of the time, but the humongous one (about 4' long with 3" knots in it) is her favorite - drags that all over the house.

we got the big rope toy for the greyhounds and airedale to play with... get one chewing/tugging at each end.. very entertaining

I'll have to try your idea when my partner isn't around, she thinks dangling a mouse on a string around a cat's tail is bad, accuses me of tormenting the cat... :eyes:

I took a good size cardboard box, cut some small holes and flaps in it, put the cat who loves boxes too much in it, closed up the box - cat had loads of fun poking through the holes, attacking the flaps. My partner said I was being cruel.. :eyes:

so I can imagine what she would say if I stuck the rope toy in the puppy's collar

22. tried your rope toy in the collar idea last night
She ignored it. Was more interested in raiding cat food bowl, or ambushing our 21yr old cat... and then crying when the 21yr old cat ambushed her back

23. That's the best suggestion yet!
 Our dog Vicki (who looks and acts almost exactly like Tovah!) didn't slow down until she was 2 years old. We got her when she was 8 weeks old. :yoiks: NOTHING tired her out. She would sleep for fifteen minutes and get right back at it. :P Chloroform would have been a blessing.

18. Avoid doing things where the puppy has to do a lot of jumping
We started our Cattle Dog Petey on a frisbee when he was about 6 months old and probably hurt him in the long run. He's quite arthritic now. I'd say don't do anything that involves a lot of jumping until they're about a year old. Then you can break out the frisbees etc.

24. Canine Day Care for a few morning a week? Or get a teenager in the neighborhood to walk the dog?
For pay? For a Scout merit badge?

A dog park is also a good idea, but the puppy has to be six months old and fully vaccinated or inoculated here to get around other dogs.

20. Get one of those throw toys with the rope at the end of it. Take the dog
to the dog park and throw and throw and throw. Till you are exhausted. The dog will be doubly so.

21. Tie the leash to your bumper and go for a drive
Worked great in "National Lampoon's Vacation". That dog was so tired he didn't make a sound for the rest of the movie!

I kid! I kid! Don't hit me!

:hide:

Maybe take him/her on a bike ride. This way the puppy can trot or jog instead of straining at the leash and you can cover a lot more distance. And if things work out, pretty soon you can have the puppy towing you around on your bike!!!
