1. I got a bunch, too.
I'll plant them later this week, when it cools off. Too damn hot today to work outside. In Minnesota. In October (WTF?).

4. You should bury them just to mess with the squirrels who dig them up
and take a bite.

7. I will be soon.
I put in at least another 40 daffodils each fall and a few irises. This year I scored some very inexpensive amaryllis belladonna bulbs -- they grow foliage in the winter rainy season then seem to go dormant for awhile before bursting into bloom in the middle of the hot dry summer.

8. DO.WANT! Those are cool!
I have these red things which are called rain lilies that may be related, they look similar anyway. Mine burst into bloom when we had a heavy rain in September.

11. These flowers are also called "Naked Ladies"
That photo doesn't do them just either. Most of the naturalized ones near here have multiple bloom stocks, each with 3 or 4 blooms. I've seen them in catalogs for $$$ but at a local nonprofit garden sale they were selling them for less than a dollar each. I'll be planting them in my xeric garden in the hottest, driest part of the yard.

14. And they have a very nice fragrance
not very strong but a sweet fragrance. There are some that appear in my yard even though I never planted them. Somebody must have years ago.

16. That's why we call them naked ladies. Our's bloom around mid-August
I just found out that if you leave the bloom on too long, there is a good chance they will fail to bloom the next year. I was told to hack the stem off before it dries out and the foliage appears.

19. Didn't know about the bloom issue.
There are lots of them in the East Bay on untended slopes. From what Sunset says the bulbs are fussy about lifting and planting times. If it's not done shortly after the blooming period the bulbs won't flower for several years.

Hacking off the stems before foliage sounds like a prudent move.

20. Old abandoned homesteads have always been a good source for Amaryllis
That's where a few of my sets have come from. In the wild, the stalks aren't removed, but they might more prolific if the stems were removed. The sets I see in bloom in the wild appear from about half the bulbs. I'm thinking the individual bulbs may bloom every other year without our help.
