Today is my 6th anniversary as a DU member.

I found DU soon after it went live, while looking for Bush jokes online. The search led me to EarlG's great Top 10 Conservative Idiots.

I was hooked immediately.

But I didn't yet own a home computer (and would not until the following January) and was able to only take short peeks while at work. Bummer. But I regularly checked out the site and found myself reading the forums. At the time, I was such a newbie to the internets that I had never previously seen any kind of discussion forum, let alone posted to one.

But, after 9/11 (the day no one at my company was successful in getting online for anything, even though we have a T1 line -- very little work got accomplished that day and ultimately, we were sent home early), but traffic must have been insane. That got me checking more often.

Then, the day after we started bombing poor Afghanistan (that was a Sunday and so I had no internet access from home), I could wait no longer. I knew, instinctively, that the United States was embarking on something that would go horribly wrong. And, sadly, I was proven to be correct.

I joined DU on that Monday and have been here ever since. I've met some amazing people here (both online and in real life) and some...well, least said, etc.

Special callouts to my dear friend Andy Stephenson and my :loveya: BDC, who would be forever unknown to me had DU not existed.

Yeah, there haven't been any meetups for a while. Unfortunately, in the couple of months ahead I have so much family stuff. Ever since my nephew married a woman with three kids, the family events have multiplied like bunnies.

5. I'm a couple of weeks behind you

It was sometime during the third week of October 01 that I joined. I remember feeling so relieved that there were actually people who felt like i did, that i wasn't alone even though it seemed like it at the time.
I don't know where I would have been if DU hadn't been here, like you I knew there was some pretty nasty stuff coming down the road, it's much easier to deal with this with a little help from your friends.

I'll always remember the day. It had been brewing in me for so long, but I was commitment shy. As I said, I had never posted on a forum. Nor can I remember what my first post was.

I think I joined in March of 01, then lost my password and had to re register a couple of months later.

So what's the opposite of a newbie? Oldie but goodie?

Someday I'll have to go through the archives and try to find my first post. I remember it being about how intellectually lazy I thought Bush was. 6 years later I think I may have been wrong about that. I think he's a pig ignorant dumb shit asshole.

I'd never been involved in any online forums, so I didn't have the nerve to register until the first week of January, 2002.

Now you've got me thinking, I wonder when our first Chicago party was. I'll have to look it up on my old imac. That's where I have all my emails stored. It's amazing all the cool people I've met through this site.
