Pasta Tales writing contest kicks off
Olive Garden has announced the question for its 12th-annual Pasta Tales writing contest open to students in first through 12th grade: "What is your favorite family activity and what makes it so special?" The answer could be worth a trip to New York and a $2,500 savings bond.

"In today's fast-paced society, time spent with family is precious," said Steve Coe, spokesperson for Olive Garden. "This year's essay question allows young writers to reflect upon their family's activities and describe the qualities that make them memorable."

From Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, Olive Garden will accept essays of 50 to 250 words from students in the U.S. and Canada. Entry forms and complete rules are available at local Olive Garden restaurants or online.

1. My favorite pasta pastime is riding pitbulls around the Buffet Table
while it bites little babies in their little heads and blood shoots out all over the spit guard.

2. Dear Amy,
we had to reject your essay, due to rule #7: Entrants should make no mention of bodily fluids.

What an odd way of phrasing it...

19. Considering the Lounge, though, I would expect the question to be...
Do they have to eat at Olive Garden?

12. Our favorite, or at least if one means "most frequent" by favorite, is being really quiet
around the house so that dad can drink whiskey without being disturbed. If he gets disturbed, he has to hit us, and sometimes he does things to my brother Bobby in the closet that makes him cry and now has him afraid to change clothes in gym class. It's fun - we have to take off our shoes and just wear our socks when we walk around so that it's really, really quiet. One night, I stayed quiet for almost two hours before dad had to throw a bottle at me, and then it got real noisy when the ambulance came with the sirens. It was weird, because there was so much noise in the hospital but no one was getting hit or having their lower lips burned with cigarettes because of it. What a strange world some people live in. Oh, and part of our favorite past time is seeing who can top off dad's beer the quickest when he yells. I can pour an entire 40 ouncer in 12 seconds without forming any of that evil, nasty foam that makes people get burned with the soldering iron.

Yours sincerely,
Elizabeth

18. Dear Elizabeth,
Thank you for your submission to our contest. We regret to inform you that it was not selected as a winning entry. There are several reasons for this, but one of the top reasons is the fact that your entry has no relation to our restaurant. So we tossed it.

Remember, when you're here, you're family. And your family is fucking nuts. So please stay away from our restaurant.

Sincerely yours,

Olive Garden, Inc.
