How much TV/film do you watch on average? |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 11:01 PM by breezygirl
For the next 2 weeks starting Sat. I will not view any TV or film at all. It's ex. cred for English, we're doing our media unit and this way if I start now I figure I'll be able to watch the Oscars and everything.
I myself don't watch significant amounts necessarily. I watch the Simpsons, King of the Hill sometimes, maybe some Comedy Central, but I don't think a real extensive amount. I have to keep a journal for the next 14 days, record what I think about, what else I do to entertain myself.
My question to you is how would you appraise your time in front of the boob tube? Are you like Dr. Scott, my social studies teacher who watches none (TV, anyways) (and is also one of the smartest people I know) or me, who's sorta in the middle (fairly smart too, I'd say) or are you a Zombie, who spends every waking hour watching Rachel and Ross get together and break up for the thousandth time (Brains, must have brains! Or American Idol!)

Reality is usually entertaining enough for me now. You'll be surprised how much better you feel when all the junk is clear from your head. I don't even listen to the radio that much anymore.

14. Lately I've been trying to go to good movies |
|
I saw Mystic River, which I liked, and Lost in Translation, which was also good, I normally try to steer clear of the chick flicks and teeny bopper movies all my friends like.

I have not owned a TV in about 15 years. I do watch occasionally (usually sports) at other people homes. (OK, OK so that means I watch more than zero hours, but you get the picture.)

5. I don't know as you're missing that much |
|
The only show I would watch if I could only watch one show would be the Daily show, but the rest I could learn to live without.

10. I know I don't miss much |

What I think is really interesting is that I am way more conscious of advertising now. It is like my mental filter has atrophied from lack of use. When I am watching with other people I actually WATCH the commercials and if I comment on them whomever I'm with generally looks at me like I have three heads. It seems for most folks (broad generalization here) advertising is like wallpaper, there but not all that noticeable, and I suppose, all the more effective and insidious because of that. For me the ads are right out in front, with the same level of importance and impact as the "main" programing.

On VERY rare occasions, I'll catch three or four minutes of TV (for example, a few days ago I entertained my friend's three-year-old in the living room, where the TV was on, while she finished getting ready for the outing we were about to depart on) and the commercials are soooooo obnoxious! Even ones with good "production values" stand out as horrific attempts at manipulation.
I listen to a fair amount (approx 3 hrs/day) of talk radio (Dave Ramsey, my financial guru) and the commercials even on the radio jump out at me. I HEAR them, because I've been weaned from what Stephen King calls "the glass teat." Advertising isn't the wallpaper of my whole fucking life anymore.
I like that.

6. Maybe a few hours a week |
|
I like Law & Order but don't watch it every week, sometimes rent a movie, love Chapelle's show but seem to miss it a lot and watch the news.

Was probably one of his best. I laughed sooo hard at that one.

8. Most TV watchers watch a LOT more than they think they are. |
|
I've been TV-free for about five years, and it was the best thing I ever did. I keep a reading journal (strictly for commenting upon what I read), and I average a book nearly every day. For 2004, I'm reading my twenty-fourth book right now.
I predict that, if you're able to go TV-free for the whole two weeks, you'll be shocked at how much free time you suddenly have.
TV-Free is the way to be. :-)

And reading. That's my plan. I'll be the most literate person on the planet and take over the world!
Just kidding. I'm just going to go for the country. :P
