Anyone from the Bay Area?
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 03:18 AM by La_Serpiente
How far away is Hayward from Berkeley? How long does it take to get from one city to the other?

Do freeways connect the two places? And how is the housing in the area? Is it affordable?

Is there a lot of theft in the area? Thanks :-)

1. not far
1/2 hour or so apart on the 580... provided you're not stuck in traffic, which is likely and will make it more like a .75 to 1.5 hour trip.

Hayward is definitley more affordable than Berkely, and both towns have good areas and bad areas. I wouldn't leave my car unlocked anyplace in berkeley or hayward, but then again I grew up in LA.

3. Like the above person said ...
It's not bad if you don't drive during the rush hour. About 30-35 minutes – or a little more if you live on the southern side of Hayward.

I actually commuted to Berkeley from Hayward for a year when I was going to university there. Usually took the "back" route 580/13 right onto Ashby Avenue in Berkeley.

You can also take the freeway that runs along to the Bay, 880/80, which also goes directly from Hayward to Berkeley. But this route is a little bit longer and definitely more congested.

Best of all, you can take BART (subway/train) directly from Hayward to Berkeley. There are several stations in Hayward and three stations in Berkeley – including Berkeley Station, which is only one block from the edge of the UC campus (if that's where you want to go).

Rents are expensive in Berkeley (unless you luck into a rent-controlled place) because it's a college town and a desirable place to live for people who like the type of atmosphere and cultural amenities that Berkeley offers.

It's definitely cheaper in Hayward, which I'd categorize in general as blue-collar suburbia. It's cheaper to live there, but if you are going to school in Berkeley (I don't know if you are), you probably want to find digs in Berkeley just for the experience.
