46. So a resume comes in, and this person has pointed out their rank in life |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 10:24 PM by DS1
Uh huh.
Not hiring that person. Well, maybe I'd interview them, to see what it's all about, and probably laugh behind their backs. But you never know, they might be exceptionally smart and have no social skills, those people are also useful. Maybe that's the kind of job the person wants, where they don't have to actually deal with anyone, are super-bright, and super-capable.
It's an interesting angle, and if it works for them, good for them. Yes, I've just done a sort of 180 on the matter after some further thought. Still, recruiting managers aren't known for further thought when they're inundated with resumes.

I'd never be in a room with a random 100 people. And then, if by some chance I were, it would depend upon the situation; if I they were specialists in something, I'd likely be below 50% as far as they were concerned.

I'm bright in some ways and slow in a lot of other ways. Some people who know me think I'm super keen and others think I'm the dumbest person on Earth I'm sure. I always scored at the top percents on those tests we took in school but I never did my homework or studied because I was too dumb to know what it would mean later, so I haven't amounted to much in life :p

71. According to Duke's TIP program |
|
I can say I'd be in the top half of the top one percent. According to tests in elementary school and to everything I have experienced in my social interaction with other people, even the other people at TIP, I can say that I'd be pretty near the top of that top half.
But I have a question.
Why do people judge other people based on their intelligence? I think that's where a lot of the stigma comes from - I can just imagine people right now thinking I'm some self-obsessed bitch who thinks I'm better than everyone else because of a few test scores. Because they make value judgements about people based on intelligence and then project it on to others and think that smart people think that they're better than other people. They're always trying to mentally place themselves on top of the species and think that other people are too. At least that's part of my theory. I'm still working on explaining prejudice and projection in general.
I just experience the world in a different way. Different is not better or worse. It's just different.
I don't get why people are so threatened by intellectual differences in ability but celebrate physical ones. No one thinks that Michael Jordan is an awful egotistical person who thinks that everyone is below him because he's better at basketball. Even though presumably he could kick your butt in a fight. What can I do to you, just sitting here in my apartment thinking stuff?
But then again - thinking can be pretty powerful, I guess. Like if you read articles about parenting intellectually gifted kids, they'll say stuff like, "Your child may even question your religious beliefs!!!! ZOMG oh noes!!!", like it's some big scary deal or something.
That's another thing I'm trying to figure out - what are humans so afraid of?
