The tree has been infected with borers. She somehow figures out where they are and lays her eggs there so they have something to eat when they hatch. A parasite of a parasite if you will.

I hesitate to post pictures of spiders because some people get freaked out at even the image of a spider, but these guys are relatively benign (unless you're a bug.)

89. I've got about a dozen of these bad boys

They roost at night in the big sugar pine over my house. They like it as it gets the early morning sun that they like to bask in before taking off again. It's actually pretty interesting watching them settling in for the night. Lots of jockeying for position and wing flapping.

I could do without the poop and vomited up partially digested critters on my deck however. :eyes:
