One of my in-laws worked in the Wisconsin Corrections system as a guard. He said that people sent to prison for abusing animals rank down there with child molesters and wife beaters, meaning that they end up getting beaten and raped by their fellow inmates quite a bit.

(EDIT: I do not in any way endorse the horrible atrocity known as prison rape or other sorts of abuse.)
