2. If he had done nothing else, "A Nightmare Before Christmas" |

would have established his reputation as a cinematic genius. I don't recall Johnny Depp (may he live and flourish forever!) appearing in that movie.

3. More like where would Johnny Depp be without Tim Burton? |
|
I'd say Depp owes Burton more than the other way around.

One of my all time favorites.
Michael Keaton did a couple of movies for Burton.

5. Somewhat less of a giant, possibly. |

But Burton made Depp, not the other way around.

6. I respectfully disagree |

Depp has proven himself repeatedly in films that had nothing to do with Burton. One can argue that Edward Scissorhands saved Depp from the inanity of roles based on 21 Jump Street or A Nightmare on Elm Street, but I'm confident that he'd have demonstrated his ability in some role or another even if Burton hadn't given him the part.
Additionally, if Burton had disappeared from the face of the Earth after Scissorhands (hey, I can dream, can't I?), Depp would still command multimillion-dollar roles and would continue to prove himself as an actor. If Depp had disappeared instead, it seems less likely to me that Burton would have done as well. Depp has been the only saving grace of a number of Burton's films. Sure, he'd likely have found someone else to play those parts, and he'd still get praise for his awful awful awful Batman films, but I doubt that he'd have enjoyed the same box office success.
Still I'm generally reluctant to use the phrase "no-talent hack" in describing Burton, so I'm happy to entertain alternative suggestions.
