17. I'd put The Wonder Years in the same catagory
Excellent, excellent show. But you didn't know whether to call it a comedy or a drama.

But looking at some of the dreck that was on TV in the late 1980s ("Alf", anyone?), it's amazing there was a show as high of a caliber as The Wonder Years.

Steven Weber is the other brother.

Did you know Timothy Daly is Tyne Daly's brother?

She, on the other hand, is not looking that great these days.

10. The Andy Griffith Show
followed by, possibly, M*A*S*H and Leave it to Beaver.

I can sit down and watch a rerun of any of these shows and still be thoroughly entertained, no matter how old they are. They drew most of their comedy from simple human nature rather than hip pop culture references. And they'll still be funny twenty years from now.

15. Traditional sitcom or non-traditional?
Edited on Thu Oct-18-07 06:59 AM by PeterU
If you are including non-traditional sitcoms, i.e., shows that weren't shot on a three sided set and didn't have a laugh track, I'd definetly say Arrested Development. Although I'd put The Office and My Name is Earl in close competition. Curb Your Enthusiasm isn't that bad either...I'd venture to say it is "pretty....pretty...good." :)

If you are talking about your standard set, laugh track sitcom, I'd say Seinfeld. Sure, it's the "easy" choice, but it was hands down the best written and smartest sitcom ever, that never got too serious or over-dramatic.

And on this side of the pond, The Office, WKRP, and...Friends. Flame away!

41. Hands Down, "What's Happening" Was The Best Sitcom Ever

That two parter about how Re-Run was illegally taping a Doobie Brothers concert was sheer genius. Let me explain, first, the show wanted to depict that music knows no racial boundaries and that hit bands like the Doobie Brothers, who were at the height of their popularity, would indeed play a concert at an inner-city predominantly African American high school in South Central, Los Angeles.

However, this grand display of racial harmony was not even the point of the episode. No, not at all. The point of the episode was that a group of thugs strong-armed Re-Run, who was so named because he had to repeat grades in school, into illegally bringing a tape recorder to said Doobie Brothers concert to create a bootleg.

Now, **SPOILER ALERT**, as the concert was rocking and rolling, Re-Run exuberance to the melodic pop rock tune, Taking it to the Streets, over-took him. He began jumping up and down, and his tape recorder fell out of his jacket. The Doobie brothers spotted this and immediately ceased the concert. Re-Run was embarrassed when confronted.

The show ends with Re-Run having to meet the thugs that made him tape the show, but the joke was on them. All that Re-Run really recorded was his munching of popcorn. You see Re-Run had an obesity problem. However, before the thugs could do damage to Re-Run, they were thwarted by the Doobie Brothers themselves.

It was truly a remarkable moment in TV sitcom history. A show that touched on themes well ahead of their time, childhood obesity, illegally obtaining copyrighted music, racial harmony, and the need for remedial education. Indeed, the best sitcom ever in TV history.
