Some of these adoption organizations are just egomaniacs with a cause! |
|
I called one up the other day to get a baby. I figured it would be easy, they have too many and should be happy to have me take one off their hands.
But it turns out they want me to prove I can afford one, fill out all kinds of forms, pay a huge fee, show that I have a room and a bed for him, show that the kid I've already got gets medical care and is well cared for...
The kicker is that if they don't think I'm taking care of the kid, somebody can take it away! Once I get him isn't he mine to keep or give to whoever I want? So if the adopted kid and LeftyKid don't get along, I have to give him back to the adoption agency and not to my handyman! That's bullshit, my handyman is an awesome responsible guy and based on our infrequent business interactions I'm sure he could totally take care of a kid.
Fuck that shit, I'm sure I can find one wandering the streets or being given away free to a good home on Craigslist instead.

5. While I find that I agree with you on a whole load of things usually |

In this case, I think you might not be making a valid comparison. That being said, I have not been reading all the threads on this for the last couple of days, so I don't know if you're reacting to something specific beyond the general sympathy people are showing for Ellen.

9. Cripes. They treat adopted babies like Ellen Degeneres' dog? |
|
For instance, assume you don't like the kid so you give it to someone else to raise. What business is of the agencies? :silly:

11. But, once your child has been adopted, you're free to name whoever you want as a guardian. |
|
Should you die, your wishes will generally be honored. And it's a COURT OF LAW, not the adoption agency, that makes the determination.
You can also send your kid to live with whoever s/he wants, or alone, upon adulthood -- and, in many circumstances, you can send your kid to live somewhere else (with a friend, relative, at a boarding school) for months at a time, and the adoption agency won't come in and take your kid back.
Even if CPS (NOT the adoption agency) comes in and does just that, placement with family is usually the case. Not with the next applicant.
It's a bad analogy, LM, even if you ignore the whole idea that dogs are not people.
