1. Misrepresenting somebody's posistion like that is pretty close to a personal attack.

5. Agreed.
Previously been on the receiving end of that meme and it's not pretty.

8. That sort of nonsense is just toxic, isn't it?
:(

14. That it is.
And very disingenuous.

15. The good thing is, he's proving my point.
In a sort of roundabout, embarassing fashion.

2. I think his point was
You can inform people about the dangers of Meth without lying and misinforming about the causes of the drug's hideous side effects. I think it struck a nerve because it's the same tactics used to 'demonize' Marijuana and may lead those who try Meth to believe the effects aren't as dangerous as they seem, when the dangers are clearly real. But I'll let the OP speak for himself, that's just what I got out of it.

For the record - I'm far from pro-meth, and I'm not supporting any pro-meth position, as that would put me in a small minority of humans in general, and I don't believe it was the OP's intention anyway.

Remember, in GD everything is black and white.

13. I didn't think you could overstate the dangers of meth.

17. I know, it's a pretty fine distinction
And I probably wouldn't have made the argument using meth as the example, but oh well, it's the OP's post, not mine. In the case of meth, I'd probably let the propaganda slide (lesser of the two evils) but again I think that's what the OP was trying to get at.

18. Had a meth addict in our clinic last week. He could have been the poster child.
Pretty rough, sores, dirty, you name it.

3. That is not a pro-meth thread.
That's an anti-hysteria-and-let's-keep-it-real-when-talking-about-drugs thread.

That's a big difference.

6. He's not "keeping it real"
The original posters position is as ludicrous as the Reefer Madness types he condemns. He's in denial about the very real physical effects of meth, never mind the significant societal degredation that occurs when meth creeps into a community.

And he's right.

11. No, he's not. And those photos require no manipulation.
And meth does cause tooth decay...not from neglect but by what it does physically to your system. It's completely unlike regular tooth decay from for instance candy. Ask any dentist who has seen it and they will tell you so.

I've seen meth addicts here locally...a few have approached me at gas stations etc. for money. One girl had huge, half-dollar sized oozing sores all over her face. It practically looked like leprosy. It definitely wasn't acne. She was so hyper and talking so fast I could barely understand her. She was maybe 18 and clearly on meth.

When you've seen the full-blown effects of meth really up-close and personal, you realize that the ads are not an exaggeration. They're simply examples of worst-case scenarios...but they're accurate. What meth can do to people is fuckin' SCARY. Unlike any other drug.

12. Oh, you've seen meth addicts. Whoopdeefuckingdoo.
For a long time Northern California was ground zero of the meth mess (it's not now, for the most part the addicts either gave it up, moved someplace cheaper or died.)

My mother is a recovering addict. My late stepfather was an addict and a cook. Don't think you can tell me about meth and what it does to people, 'cause you have no fucking idea.

20. Yes, I do have a fucking idea, thankyouverymuch.
My best friend was a meth addict for two years and I learned all about it, believe me.

She wasn't an extreme case, and maybe your parents weren't either. But you should know just as well as I do that the extreme cases are beyond fucked up, physically and mentally.

Thanks for the added snark.

19. Right. And dental health is only part of the problem.
But again - I'll repeat myself - I did meth and I had no dental consequences.

The decay is a result of the lack of self-care - failure to brush, failure to keep adequately hydrated by drinking water, etc.

10. It is about keeping it real. The physical effects of meth vary among the using/abusing population.
I'm speaking from experience, and I have all of my teeth and my mental faculties, thank you.

Crystal methamphetamine IS a DANGEROUS drug. I count my lucky stars that I came out of my years of use on this side of the statistical fence, instead of on the toothless or permanently paranoid side.

We do our children a disservice by emphasizing meth's effects on oral hygiene (are we so vain and careless?) instead of also giving an in-depth discussion to the consequences of long-term sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and the lack of self-care that comes with ANY addiction.
