Carrying on tradition, community piles 150 pounds of ham onto biscuit

It may not be the biggest ham biscuit ever, but the Trigg County Country Ham Festival’s Big Biscuit is still the biggest edible biscuit ever, according to Helping Hands Volunteer Peggy Graham.

Graham said that this yea’s biscuit boasts 150 pounds of Broadbent Ham, purchased at cost, 150 pounds of flour donated by the Hopkinsville Milling Company, 12 gallons of buttermilk from Goldenrod Dairy, and plenty of yeast and baking powder. Trigg County Schools donated labor, and Wendy’s of Cadiz contributed foil wrappers for the finished biscuits. She added that Little River Propane Gas donated fuel to fire the big gas oven located at the Bank of Cadiz.

“We started at 6 a.m. and took two hours to mix it up and knead the dough. We had people climb into the middle of the pan wearing booties with rolling pins,” said Graham. “The biscuit measures 10 feet across and goes all the way to the edge of the pan, making it the largest edible biscuit in the world. The other one is not edible from what I’m told.”

Proceeds from the sales of $2 portions of the biscuit go to the Helping Hands Food Bank. Last year, Graham said that over 450 portions were sold. This year, the goal was higher. “We ran out of ham last year, so this time we have twice as much. It’s going like gangbusters this morning and we expect to have stragglers all day.”
