Question about the Do-wrap? |
|
I'm asking this sincerely and without prejudice. I see a lot of black guys wear black stocking caps usually called do-wraps. I'm curious about the origins of this style, and I wonder if there is a practical aspect to the head-wear, like keeping the head cool or the sun off. Or is this just a fashion statement. I'm not criticizing, I actually think they look pretty cool. signed, A hopelessly out-of-touch white guy.

There could be any number of reasons -
Condition hair. (Black hair typically needs a LOT of conditioner and it needs to set it.)
Set hair - into waves, rows, etc.
Half-done hair-do (it takes HOURS to do some "do's")
Not done at all hair (hey you have to hide it some way sometimes!)

seemed to amount to it all has to do with hair care as opposed to just a fashion thing.

I mean - it is primarily a "hair care" thing - but since it's something many HAVE to do, it's also a "fashion thing". Especially if you're having an acutely bad hair day and you have to cover it up.
Does that make sense?
It always PISSES ME OFF when I see those signs saying NO Do-Rags! I mean - how gd racist and exclusionary is that? Yeah, I understand some gangs wear certain colors, etc, but jhfc - gangs are going to wear SOMETHING as a "sign" - unless you make everyone go in naked or something.

That certainly explains my scarves. Don't know about do-wraps, though (I have wimpy Caucasian hair).

7. I wear one under my helmet when I ride. Not a fashion statement, |
|
it just keeps the helmet liner cleaner. I actually look pretty dorky with one.

8. I came upon a pimp one morning in Brooklyn |

If you understand the lifestyle, you'll know how rare that is ... but he was up and about that day. As we waited for the cashier to finish my order, he asked if I wanted a new lifestyle - and apologized for his appearance.
He was charming, so I demurred politely and, having similar hair, shared that I too had a do rag as a teenager. We parted friends.
