1. I use it for burgers, tacos, meatloaf, chile, etc. |
|
BUT...I always use the ground turkey breast because the regular ground turkey meat sometimes has gristle in it and then that ruins the entire thing for me.
If you use the ground turkey breast be sure not to overcook it or it will be dry and use some sort of liquid binder to retain moisture.
Good luck!

It doesn't really taste much like beef, but it's a tasty, healthier substitute. I've never known anyone who doesn't like ground turkey in recipes or as a burger. Go get a pound and try it.

3. Taste or nutritional value? |
|
Ground beef, with comparative leanness, has a higher fat/calorie/cholesterol content. Ground beef also has a slightly higher protein content.
I haven't had either in a long while, and I can't compare the taste one v the other.

Turkey burgers are pretty good--I prefer beef, but I'll gladly substitute turkey when grilling at home.

are you talking ground turkey breast (which is lower in fat and calories) or are you talking about generic ground turkey (which to me doesn't differ much at all--not even in taste).

13. Healthier substitute for ground beef.... |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 10:05 AM by SacredCow
but, of course, the taste leaves a LOT to be desired. I've used it for meat loafs and burgers, but only mixing it with some ground beef or pork- otherwise, it can be as dry as the Sahara.
On edit... Personally, I don't mind the flavor of ground turkey, but lots of my friends who are bona-fide beef addicts find it repulsive.

So, it could have been the vendor (FOOD LION) or the turkey itself.

|

And you have to add flavor it by adding stock or maybe olive oil, in addition to whatever seasonings you want.
I tend to want to cook turkey and use it like other fowl: roasted, or smoked legs,
I used to make something I called white chili with ground turkey breast, black eyed peas, garlic, S&P, and liquid smoke, served over rice. Haven't made it in a while though,
edit: If i want a ground meat recipe, I now just wait until I can have the real thing, which is about a handful of times during the year.

Much healthier than ground beef, although if you're making meatloaf or a burger or something that needs to hold together you have to help it along more than you would with beef. Easiest solution is adding egg white. (or an entire egg if you're lazy.)

usually in chili or pasta sauce. If you brown it, it has more flavor, but I use a lot of spices, veggies and pepper, so blandness isn't an issue anyway.

29. Add some Olive oil and a lot of spice. |
|
Olive oil keeps it from drying out (plus it boosts your omega three intake) and the spice keeps it from being bland. I use it in place of beef for any Mexican or Italian dish where I used to use any ground meat.
If you like the taste of Mexican chicken dishes the ground chicken is very nice to use because it will absorb flavors quickly. We love chicken tacos or enchiladas, and I don't always have time to make shredded chicken. The ground chicken works great when you are in a hurry!
