I'm a big peking duck guy myself. Though the last 20 times I've been down to chinatown I've had soup dumplings.

1. fried rice is a must
(though bi-baby, the infideL gets an order of white rice)

and from there we try to spread it out among:

chicken wings
peking ravioLi (Love that shit!)
Low mein (with those dry noodLes)
spare ribs on the bone
scaLLion pancakes
beef & brocoLi

no matter what we get, my pLate gets smothered in the hot mustard sauce... preferabLy the kind that comes in a container, as the packet ones are crap.

7. it's hard to get good fried rice anymore
...and if it's steamed, or comes with peas or carrots in it, I'm never going back. Real fried rice is nutty tasting, with bits of egg and char siu and scallion. It's my litmus test for a Cantonese restaurant. And I haven't had a good dish of it made properly in years.

5. I go to a food-court Chinese joint for lunch nearly every day.
It's 'Chinese' in the sense that it has the word 'Wok' in the name. The recipes are shall we say 'unorthodox': the General Tso's chicken has jalapeno slices in place of the red chilies. :eyes:

Anyway, same order every time: mixed vegetables, General Tso's and glass of ice water. They start putting it together as soon as they see me approaching, which usually allows me to jump ahead of the menu-readers in line. It's good to be a regular.

43. true but
a lot of the "Chinese" restaurants in my city are pretty pan-Asian. We have some amazing Thai & Japanese places, a few Chinese with Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese, and some other similar mixes, plus the usual American stuff like sweet & sour. Not sure about the person who you were responding to, but it's pretty common here.

Anyway, there's a place in town that does amazing orange faux ribs with homemade tofu. yum. They are seriously addicting, and even non-vegetarians love them. The same place also does great mu shu, a wide variety of homemade noodle dishes and soups.

as long as they put white sauce on it...

I get enough Chinese dumplings at home, so I never really order them in a restaurant.

When we go down to Main St. in Flushing, my wife usually orders some sort of fish dish for me, though I'm not sure what it's called.

33. Sweet and sour chicken w/ white rice
Sauce poured on the chicken but not the rice, and then I "pat" the rice with the chicken.

I always ordered it as a kid, and have never gotten out of ordering it now, even as an adult.

Although if I'm at a buffet, I'll add lo mein, dumplings, sesame chicken and fried rice.

71. Hot & Sour Soup, Potstickers, House Special Lo Mein (with Garlic Chili Sauce. Mu Shu Pork.
Also like spicy dishes, especially with cashews. The spicier the better. Bring extra chili paste.

It's not hot enough until you're sweating and crying is our motto.

Chinese Spare Ribs.

Oh and Ginger Beef.

Funny story.

My kids would eat authentic Hot and Sour soup really young.

(And adding white pepper and vinegar by the way.)

In one restaurant my son who about 4 at the time was devouring his soup, but also wiping his tongue periodically with the napkin. He wasn't aware of it, but he actually drew an audience from the kitchen. They were pretty amused by him.

Remember:

He likes it! Hey Mickey! :D
