Dog people, how often do you let your dogs out to heed the call of nature? |
|
Housemate lets the dogs out hourly during the day and then once or twice at night. I let mine out about four times a day or if they indicate a desire to go out. My 2 dogs know how to tell me when they need out -- one brings me a dog toy in her mouth and then looks toward the door, the other just nudges me and looks toward the door. Mine are able to make it through the night without needing to go out but if I oversleep they make sure and let me know.
I think housemate's dogs have her trained and not vice versa.

1. they have a regular schedule |
|
once in the morning, once when we get home from work, a walk after dinner, and one final time before bed. but they also know that any time we get home from anything is time to go out also.

2. I am in a bind because I am working on |
|
house-training the new dog, but mostly they go out in the morning before I leave for work; then Little MB lets them out before she goes to school or Mr MB will before work. First one home lets them out. Maybe once or twice more before bed, depending on the time.
My older dog can go 12 hours if need be - not that I choose to do that to her, but it has happened and she would rather die than mess the house.

3. At least 4 times a day. |
|
Whenever we are home, we leave the back door open so they can come and go as they please. They generally sleep all night without having to go out, but suddenly one of them has decided that the basement is his bathroom. Last night we let them out at 10 pm and at 10:30 I heard him going into the basement, and sure enough, this morning there was a present. :grr:
Your housemate's schedule seems excessive, but if he or she is OK with doing that, I guess it's nice for the dogs not to ever have to wait.

5. We have a doggie door that leads to the back yard. |
|
It's open from 6AM until about 11PM.
And the puppy still poops in the sunroom. :eyes:

|
I cleaned it up, but I'm out of paper towels, so I just sprayed the 409 over it and left it until Mr. comes home with some paper towels. Gah.
If she weren't so darned cute... Only good thing is that room has laminate stone look flooring, so it could be worse. I removed the rug when we got her.

14. Luckily I seem to find it right away and since the |
|
floor is ceramic tile, I can bleach the daylights out of it. She used to pee in there too, but I am glad she stopped that since I was concerned about the grout.
I will take her out and she will watch the old dog poop and pee - ON COMMAND - and then she just runs around and comes in to go in the sunroom.
And yes, if they weren't so darned cute.....

So, I don't discover the deed until I go down at lunchtime. :sigh:

|
I make the dog be with me at every moment, if I can help it, even so far as bringing it in the bathroom when I am taking a shower - she's a little voyeur now.

Mr MB tries to work in his office but the little devil wants to be in his lap. His solution was to put her bed on the bookshelf and put her in it. Then she just hung out there until he was done and took her outside.

7. My dogs always have access to the outside |
|
I let the big'n play and be free at minimum 2 times a day.
They also tell me they need to go out if the doors are closed. Usually in some annoying as hell way. My lil dachshund mic comes to me and sits like a groundhog staring at me. The Akita puts his head by my face and makes these popping noises that he knows drives me bonkers. :D

15. I think it's good for them to have outside time |
|
just for the sake of being outside and rambunctious. My older dog loves being outside laying in the sun on a nice day and is content to do so for hours. The younger dog is much more neurotic, she'll frolic for a little bit but she doesn't like to be without a human interaction. She'll stand outside the door and bark to be let back in even if the other dogs are outside to play with her (we have a fenced yard and 5 dogs total -- it's a nuthouse).

13. I let my doggie out in the morning when he asks, |
|
which may be 4 am or it may be noon, and let him back in at about 11 PM. If the weather is bad and he isn't in the doghouse I let him in and then let him out whenever he asks (paces around kitchen and stares at the door.)
Regards, Mugu

How often varies, in the morning, several times during the day, evening, before bed, someimes in the middle of the night. We let them out into the dog run at night, sometimes they say they want to go (stare at us, get excited if we ask if they want to go out) but never get off the deck. Sometimes it mainly seems like boredom on their part.

23. I guess this is my issue with the housemate |
|
I don't think she lets the dogs get to the point of asking, she's always preemptively letting them out. They're not puppies and none of them is aged. I think ideally you and your dog should have a way of communicating that need and her dogs don't do that and as a result I think she's trained them to not have control and they do, in fact, have accidents at night if she doesn't wake up and let them out.

I just remember a friend from high school stating once that "dogs belong outside." Still, even he let the dog inside.
