I am very discouraged....
I joined DU not to long ago to try and make some sort of difference. I felt like there were quite a few folks here I could relate to and that we were all on the same team. Our country is in so much trouble. We are at the point of nearly no return to what it once was. I would do just about anything to help anyone or jump on the bandwagon for positive change. Yet day after day I see bashing of fellow democrats.
I have worked in the medical profession all my life and even though a doctor on the staff of a hospital was totally shit, you would NEVER hear a fellow doctor say anything negative about that individual. It's an unwritten law. That is how the republicans work. Foley got hammered and was quietly sent away...never to be heard from again. Vitter stays on without question and Craig, well, you know where we are with that. I can go on and on. Yet, when I post something I think is really important, it practically gets ignored. Yet, I see a lot discussed that is a lot of moaning about something and/or someone.
While everyone is bitching and moaning the man "behind the curtain" continues on his destructive path of annihilation of our country and constitution. Yes, there are a lot of positive things said here but DU is like a club within a club...it's hard to break through and be heard.

The bitchers and moaners should channel off to Dear Abby and those who want to meet someone go to e fu&king harmony.com.
I know I am ranting but I feel angry and hurt. This is what I posted last evening...3 hits on one and zero on the other. The vote comes up on Tuesday...While folks are talking about Dennis and the UFO incident (give me a break)a vote will be upcoming on a new Attorney General who thinks water-boarding is OK????????????? WTF...if they came for you in the middle of the night and took you away because of whatever and you found yourself in a secret detention center what then? I can promise ya, you won't be worried about Dennis and the UFO's or Hillary being, well Hillary.
Maybe I am missing something and maybe DU isn't what I expected at all. I have a lot to offer but I feel I have no takers here.

Zero to the above....and a lot of focus below (just an example of many...am I missing something?

1. You're forgetting that we're all humans...
topics that are sensationalist will get more attention... that's just how it goes.

Tips for helping your action-oriented topics: find a few people to help you keep action items kicked, place "ACTION NEEDED" in the subject line, or use a catchy (and misleading) bait and switch subject line, and hope for the best.

Also keep in mind that It's a hectic time... because in addition to working for whatever cause they choose to spend time on (election reform, voter education, media outreach, etc.), people are also likely working for their candidates wherever they live. So naturally, energies are even more drained than usual... also, some people are on their 'down time' here, their activist stuff is off-line. You just never know...

You could try to find a better place, I don't think there's much better out there, though... good luck, whatever you do.

3. bitching and moaning about bitching and moaning
Everyone has threads that sink. Everyone has felt at one time or another that they weren't getting the attention they deserved. Everyone has heard that TIRED characterization of Republicans always maintaining the party line while Democrats pick at each other over every detail. I'm sorry you feel hurt, but is this about "the cause" or your feelings?

If it's about what you believe is important, GD isn't always the best place to be heard. There are lots of by-topic forums here where people may be much more receptive. The first reply to your post has good suggestions as well.

If it's about your feelings, then you should know that and that's something for you to work on. But you sound a bit mixed up to me, like your ego is really the driving force, but you know that's not cool so you have to show how your cause is really righteous and the problem is the culture here. No one really wants to swallow that.

Good luck.

4. NOT
Ego the driving force? You don't know who I am. I am thick skinned. First and foremost a "fixer". I have been a nurse all my life. I genuinely CARE about others, I give back (maybe too much, I've been told)but others come first....always have. Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "hurt"... discouraged is more like it. We are in a period where urgency is front and center...there is no room for complacency. A lot of folks talk the talk but few walk the walk. I am proud to be one who walks.

8. I'm just telling you what your post sounds like...
Of course I don't know you. But I can read. I'm just telling you how your posts (both of them actually) read to me. It's up to you to decide if there's any merit in my perception. Obviously you think there is not. I'm actually more convinced than I was before given how many times you used the word "I" in your reply and how you bring pride into it. You can be thick-skinned, and you can be a giver who genuinely cares, and still have your ego bruised when people don't pay attention to you.

10. People know we're fucked and don't know how to deal with it.
There is little that we can do directly, to break up the aggregations of power that are in place.

The overall resistance of the country's people has helped to bring about small victories such as the investigation into Blackwater's immunity deals, etc. This helps as it puts a stumbling block in place against the use of Blackwater within the States, which is something that worried me a lot.

The Democrats won't act against the corporatists. The oil has been monopolized. The US economy has been pilfered. The cost of living is rising and the value of the dollar is falling.

The best things you can do are to increase the amount of positivity through decreasing the amount of suffering. Donate to charity. Give to Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Feed the homeless. Aid the Red Cross. Donate to women's shelters. Arrange for some dogs and cats to visit sick and dying children in the hospitals. Visit those in old folks' homes. Phone or visit someone you know is lonely. Form groups that do these things regularly.

We must take care of ourselves. It is imperative. Consider these actions if the amount of suffering in the States increases.

(Isn't the amount of Americans without health insurance five times higher than when BushCo stole the White House?)

11. Why are you bring this to the lounge - this is the home of bitching, moaning and meeting up
Perhaps your best bet is to try in the New York lounge where you can encourage other New Yorkers to contact their senator.

Usually when I want people to call Joe Biden I do so in the DE forum since, well, we're the people he's actually representing

13. Throw expletives into your OP titles and you'll get noticed!
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 12:42 PM by Breeze54
:P

It's all in the "marketing' of your OP title.

Sometimes it's already been discussed to death and people are tired of it.

Do a search before you post. ;) And remember, as #1 said, we're all human.

What you find extremely interesting and important, others may not.

Try joining a group on DU that shares your concerns on that subject.

Sometimes stuff I've posted (that I think is really important) gets ignored

in the AM and then in the PM it becomes a 'hot topic' or vice-versa.

It just depends. Hope that helps some... :hi:

PS.
On your Please email Senator Schumer post you got 16 replies and 3 recommends.
That's not bad for GDP but (no offense) your title sucks.

Your 2nd OP was posted during happy hour...in the lounge...need I say more? ;)

18. Just so you know....
It's very difficult to get people to send e-mails or sign petitions here.

With that in mind, understand you have to work at it and babysit that thread.

Also understand that a lot of members get the same e-mails that you get. ;)

to DU! :hi:

20. All joking aside here is my heartfelt advise to you
RELAX!!

I've been here since a few months after the start of DU and I can assure you that there is alot of heart & soul found here at Democratic Underground.

I've marched in over 15 protests where I've met close to 200 various DUers thru these marches. I've manned the phones with DUers, I've knocked on doors with DUers and I've cried both tears of joy and sadness over the results.

I can assure you that everyone is doing their part about the AG confirmation. I've got Biden covered (I'm from DE) and he's going to vote "NO". I've emailed all the others on the Judiciary, signed a few petitions and done whatever else I can - I'm sure the rest have done just the same.

So relax, this is the lounge. Kick off your shoes and come break bread with the goofiest liberals you'll ever find. We're a hardworking group of liberals that get frustrated over some of the bullshit in GD/GDP but we're diehard liberals nonetheless.

27. I think you're being too hasty about DU...
...and, frankly, a bit judgmental. There are many forums on DU. I agree that the issues you feel strongly about are important, yet DU is fairly broad and so you have to explore the many avenues available until you find the specific ones where you'll find the feedback and response you think is appropriate. This will take time, and I recommend patience. Yes, it can be frustrating. Life is frequently frustrating, and DU can be, too. But in the end, DU has much to offer.

Having said that, I'll add that when I read a post that begins "Tell Sen. Schumer" such-and-such, I am likely to proceed with caution, because I consider myself an independent thinker who does not like to be told what to do, who to tell, or how to tell them. Your implicit lack of faith in the ability of like-minded folks such as DU'ers to read your words, your arguments, your issues, and respond as we will, being free-thinking individuals, brings up in my own mind (of course I speak for nobody else) a kind of anxiousness that can be self-defeating.
