I have finally become one of them. I've been riding my bicycle 20 miles every day |
|
I have no idea how this happened. It takes me 80 minutes on a Giant touring bike. I end up at Stephen King's house, turn around and head back home. BTW, no one can enter his property as it is creepily protected by plants that look like they'd strangle you if you passed onto his road. You can't see his house, but you can run into him at Publix and at anti-war marches in Sarasota.

1. That's cool, as long as you don't insist.... |
|
That's cool, as long as you don't insist on riding smack dab in the center of the car lane as if you were one of the cars.
Especially if there is a perfectly good shoulder, bike lane and/or sidewalk right by. Sorry, just one of my pet peeves.
Other than that, ride on!

Like Minneapolis, riding on the sidewalk is illegal. Personally I HATE walking down the sidewalk and having some asshole on a bike come from behind silently and passing within inches.
Car drivers ALSO have to realize that a bike has just as much right of way as you do on the road, which also means bikes have to follow the traffic laws.
So no, do not ride on the sidewalk, it is stupid and dangerous, and auto drivers, you also need to realize that that bike has just as much right as you do to be on the road.
Yes, I ride a bike and yes car drivers piss me off with their behavior. I come close to dying each and every time I get on that thing.

10. As long as you're not in the middle of the car lane it's not a problem... |
|
But speaking from the other side, getting stuck behind a biker going 15-20 mph smack dab in the center of the lane on a no-passing road is just rude on the biker's behalf.

I agree. Bikers can be their own worst enemies at times too. But you have to realize how mnay people DONT see me unless I am smack in the middle of the road. With lights flashing. I do it for a reason.

12. Riding on sidewalks is illegal MOST places, except where posted. |
|
And yes, bicycles belong on the road just like cars. Not the shoulder, not the sidewalk. We are required to ride as far to the right as practical but when the situation warrants it (lots of parked cars, making a left turn, etc.) we may just be in the middle of that lane. That's just what happens.

8. You begin to miss hills if it's too flat |
|
There have been times in Holland, Belgium and Germany when I wished for a little undulation in the landscape. When you're trekking, those downhill free rides(not really free since you work on the ascent) are a welcome break.
