Poll question: Do you like to fly? |

Ok, my last topic before I sign off for now. Everyone have a good weekend! I hate flying and would use a plane only if necessary.

1. I like it, but I wouldn't say I relish it. |
|
The fact that it hurts me like hell (because of changes in air pressure) doesn't make me dislike it.

Flying used to be fun; today, it isn't much better than riding on the bus. I remember when airplanes actually gave passengers some leg room. I am 5' 10" and my height is in my legs, so space is important to me.

4. "relish it" is too strong because of all the hassles associated with it |
|
however i do like to fly and collect miles and play various games with promotions so that i can visit more places cheaply or with free tickets, i might not fly "just to fly" but i would and have flown on a mileage run, it pays off for me in the end
if they would go back to the old carry-on rules and throw out the stupid-ass liquid restrictions, it would make a genuine difference in how confortable the flights were and how quickly i could get thru security
i don't see the point of taking off the shoes, there needs to be another way that doesn't cause so many problems for seniors, diabetics, and other people who should not or have difficulty taking off shoes in public

|
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 04:37 PM by stuntcat
I like to watch people and I usually spend a lot more time walking through airports than actually on the planes. The actual flying part I don't like so much though because I'm just ready to land safe and stand up again.

|
i'm surprised at that comment, altho i've heard it before, but in my observation the people watching in airports is significantly less likely to be interesting that people watching in areas such as cafes and parks 1) where you don't have to worry about someone possibly listening in and reporting on your every word and 2) parks, esp. there is a better chance of them doing something visually interesting, such as an informal ball game
in airports you see people do the same things over and over, very repititive behavior

While I love the whole setting and environment of an airplane, I do find it annoying when the plane is crowded and the seat room is too limited. I prefer to have one seat in a row to myself and if I don't, I find it unpleasant

35. Actually in retrospect you've reminded me of a few other things I don't like |
|
Hi MVD:hi:
The security hassle is a nightmare to get through -I am SO glad when I get through that phase of the journey.
And pressure on the ears has long been VERY irritating for me. When the plane takes off, it's usually not that bad but coming down again -UGH!
While I would not like to be injured in a plane crash, strangely enough I am non-plussed about the prospect of dying in a plane crash. To me, if I were to die in a plane crash, at least I'd die doing something I enjoyed (i.e. flying) and hopefully relatively quickly. I would obviously not want to inflict the pain, suffering and loss that a plane crash would involve on my friends and family though or to have the other families of my fellow passengers go through the same experience. But it's never been a major factor for me -if it happens, it happens and who am I to question fate?

I hate driving. And the last time I look Amtrak - for what was supposed to be a 16 hour trip - I spend the entire last 20 hours of my 16th birthday stuck on a train... which, btw, went in reverse for 2 hours in the middle of Oregon! :eyes:

19. I used to like to fly |
|
But after this year, have concluded it sucks big time.
I detest this cr@p at the airport, the silly-butt TSA rules with not bringing in liquids and then paying extortion prices for water once inside the terminal(someone told me recently the next war will not be over oil but water)...and the various other indignities experienced through the security gate.
I figured out last summer I can drive 10 hours at a time, so when weather is permitting, I may drive more to long distance destinations.
If I could have one wish is having the courage to fly a small plane and forego the commercial aircr@p altogether!

|
Edited on Mon Nov-05-07 10:48 AM by pitohui
the only reason i might fly on a short trip is if i need the miles topped off, but the advantages of driving are so huge -- no waiting for security, you can leave when you're ready, you don't have to spend much time packing because you can just put everything in the trunk and have it along, tools and a big cooler of drinks can be carried, two people or more can go as cheaply as one, me and my pets can go as cheaply as one on an airplane, no need for a rental car plus insurance (my regular auto insurance doesn't cover rental car insurance)
driving is just better and cooler in every way, the only problem is that my car doesn't do so well on the transatlantic/transpacific portion of the journey :-)
a few years back i took a mileage run to a city where i can drive in 9.5 hours, since i live in nola, you can't get there from here and there is always a connection, but i found a flight where going to airport, going through security, getting one flight, connection time, getting next flight was a couple hours shorter -- plus i had use of a car for free at the other end -- so i tried it -- fine going out but it took me almost 20 hours to get home thanks to tornadoes at my connection and re-routes far to the north before i could find a plane back to nola
because things can so frequently go wrong when you're flying, a potential couple hours' savings IF everything goes right when you fly simply isn't enough even with a free car in the package

I love to fly for two reasons:
1. Airports are GREAT places to go people watching. Really, you get all kinds of strange, crazy people at airports. You get people going to weddings, funerals, vacations, business meetings, all gathering at one central location.
2. There's things you see at airports that you don't see anywhere else. One thing - no last call. Hell, there's no first call either! Another - the luggage store. Another - the pre-flight lounges.

who don't know how to behave in public, especially not in an enclosed space such as an airplane.
Flying used to be a joy and something kind of fun. Now it is a dreadful exercise in putting up with some of the worst of humanity without going insane or throwing people off.
And now that Republicans have us in a 'fear all the time!!!!!!!' mode, the utterly irrelevant, ineffective, and ridiculous security nonsense makes flying even worse than it already was.

Hate to fly, have made total strangers hold my hand at take-off and landing. One time got to the airport too late to drink water with my Valium so had to eat it. Always eat it now - much more effective. Will use it only for flying - don't want to let it lose its effect.

I no longer fly at all, I have a severe phobia. It seems to run in the family - my father and sister both have it as well and can only fly when they take anti anxiety medications, which I tried but they didn't work. So I just take car trips. Works fine for me. The last time I did fly I barely forced myself onto the plane and felt like I was going to throw up for hours - for me it's just not worth it.

But I've never turned down a trip I needed to make (business) or wanted to make (vacation). I think it's the "Hey, what's holding this up?" thing. Funny thing - we were leaving Austin for Houston and on back to Tampa one time. Weather in Austin was OK but there was a big storm just west of Houston and that was delaying our takeoff. Alot of people were getting antsy about the flight. I had an empty seat next to me and a flight attendant sat down saying "I'll sit by you, you look so calm." Yeah, me and the three Bloodys I brought on board. Turns out the captain said he wouldn't make the flight if he didn't have to, get off now if you want. About 3/4 of the passengers bailed. We took another flight next morning.

To me, the whole air travel day is a fucking living nightmare, starting with boarding the first plane of the day. Trying to find an overhead storage bin. Getting squeezed into a too small seat. Waiting in the plane for half an hour before they get clearance to get on the runway. In the meantime, it's hot, cramped and stuffy and the little air blower thingies above the seats don't work for shit. And since the first flight is probably late, by the time I land I have 5 minutes to get from one side of the airport to the other to get to my connecting flight on time, so I'm running like a fucking maniac. I get there just in the nick of time, only to find that flight has been delayed and have to wait around for three hours. Then I get to repeat the whole process again on that flight.
And then there's always that extra added bonus of them losing your luggage.
Did I forget anything? :)

The security setup is a little ridiculous and definately invasive, but they seem to mostly have their shit together now. My son and I (both of us being Cuacasian males) don't have any unusual problems or anything. The Minneapolis airport is great, well laid out, clearly labeled, efficiently run, plenty of parking, and on the light rail line.
Flying my own plane... ah, well, I got to take-off and fly a Cessna 172 for about 15 minutes when I was 17. I'm hooked, and would love to do that for a living.

Flying sucks these days-- between being treated like a terrorist, enduring the maximum packing that airlines practice, and the various other discomforts, it isn't worth it unless I absolutely have to fly. I used to fly several times a year. Now I fly once every several years, and hate it.

Anyway, I really must have a window seat. Being able to look out of the window at 30,000 feet is the only thing that makes all the BS tolerable.

I had aspirations of being a pilot and I've had a few hours on stick, which is what I call "flying", but I can't afford the $10000 to get the license or the upkeep you have to do every year to keep it.
I hate being a passenger in an aircraft - control issues.

69. i used to be completely indifferent |
|
i remember flying all over the place, snow storms, rain storms, heavy lightening and wind, and it wouldn't even phase me.
know what changed that altogether -- flying with my kids. Since then, I can't stand it. It's the weirdest thing. Turbulence makes me absolutely white-knuckled now and never did before. Something about those little eyes staring at you while the plane is jostling about -- god, I can hardly stand it. :puke:

70. flying yes, sitting in a cabin NO! |
|
nothing like having my knees in my face for 5 hours with a seat crammed into them, very thin air in the cabin, nothing to do but stare forward or a tiny unviewable screen. No meals, no snacks, maybe a drink if I’m lucky.
