Biogeek question: would it be feasible to implant male DNA into a sterile egg? |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-02-07 05:47 PM by Taverner
I'm just musing - could it be possible at one point to strip the DNA out of an existing healthy egg, and then implant a male's DNA(let's just say that the donor egg comes from a relative of the male) into that egg. And then fertilize the egg with another male's semen (and thus bring a baby with two male parents into the world)?
Likewise, do you think it would be feasible to do the same for two female parents (same process, except that DNA added to a sterilized sperm rather than an egg)?
I'm not talking possible, but more feasible - as in something that could come about in 10-20 years?

No, you wouldn't be able to strip all the RNA out of cell and keep it alive. DNA sure. Maybe you mean DNA?
If you're talking about DNA, then you'd have a fifty fifty chance of a double YY, I'm quite sure that'd be unviable, or an XY, which could be.

2. I suppose you'd have to do this with quite a few eggs |
|
And then eliminate the YY's
What's holding this technology back?

3. I think the YYs would take care of themselves. |

I think they've done it with two female mice.

Just a fun fact: If a male embryo (XY) is not exposed to a tiny bit of testosterone during development it will develop in to a female (yes women do have testosterone, just not much of it). At least by all appearances a female until she tries to have kids. The "default" human state is female.
