Behind the Catholic celebration lies a pagan one.

Aztecs and Maya had great astronomers and great calendars; they knew when the solstice and the equinox occurred. So their pagan holidays were set to coincide with those dates, just like the Greeks and Romans did with theirs (Pomona day - Harvest Day).

The Catholic Church created it's holidays to coincide with these pagan rituals, to obscure their original meaning.

Halloween (All Hallowed's Eve) was created to preserve the original pagan Holiday by moving it two days earlier.

The Aztecs and Maya just adopted the Holiday for their own pagan purpose.
